The IE-SS/A and IE-SSR are vandal proof and weather resistant sub stations designed for use with the systems listed above. They're constructed with 12 gauge stainless steel, and the IE-SSR features a red mushroom call button. The units either flush mount into a 2-gang box, or surface mount with the SBX-2G. Each unit includes tamper proof screws and a tool for installation.

1) Will the Aiphone IE-SS/A door station fit a standard 2-gang electrical box?
Yes. The IE-SS/A flush mounts directly into a 2-gang box, and the unit itself measures 4-11/16" x 4-11/16" x 2". If there's no box in the wall, surface mount it with the SBX-2G back box instead, which brings the assembly to 4-3/4" x 4-7/8" x 3-5/8" at the top and 2-3/8" at the bottom. The SBX-2G is sold separately.
2) Does the IE-SS/A intercom sub station need its own power supply?
No separate power supply at the door. The IE-SS/A draws its power from the master station over the same run, and terminations are color-coded prewired pigtails. Wiring is 2 conductor, and Aiphone specifies #822202 cable. Maximum wire distance depends on the master system the sub is connected to, not on the sub itself.
3) What is the difference between the IE-SS/A and the IE-SSR call button versions?
Same 12 gauge stainless faceplate and same 2-gang mounting on both. The difference is the button: the IE-SS/A uses a limited stop stainless steel call button, and the IE-SSR uses a limited stop red mushroom button. Both are SPST and ring a call tone at the master when pressed. The mushroom version is the one to order where a gloved hand, a driver in a vehicle, or a low-vision user has to find and hit the button without looking.
4) Can the Aiphone IE-SS/A be mounted outdoors in a cold climate?
Yes, it's a weather resistant exterior sub station, but the two button styles have different cold ratings. The flush switch on the IE-SS/A is rated 14F to 158F. The red mushroom switch on the IE-SSR is rated -22F to 185F. The speaker itself is rated -67F to 187F. For a gate or entry that sees sub-freezing winters, the mushroom button version is the one that holds up.
5) Is this Aiphone door station vandal resistant enough for a public entrance or parking garage?
It's built for abuse. The faceplate is 12 gauge stainless steel, the speaker is moisture and puncture resistant and sits behind a 3-layer steel baffle, and the microphone is baffle protected as well. Mounting is with tamper proof screws, and the T-10 TORX bit is in the box. That combination is what makes it a fit for apartment entries, garages, loading docks, and school exterior doors where a plastic station gets destroyed.
6) What comes in the box with the IE-SS/A, and what do I still need to buy?
Each unit ships with tamper proof 6x32 mounting screws for a flush gang box plus the T-10 TORX bit to drive them. What is not included: the master station, the 2 conductor wire (Aiphone #822202), and the SBX-2G surface back box if you aren't flush mounting. Note that when you use the SBX-2G, you install the sub with the hardware packed with the SBX-2G rather than the flush screws.
7) Does the Aiphone IE-SS/A have a camera, or is it audio only?
Audio only. The IE-SS/A is a speaker, microphone, and call button station: hands free talk at the door, with the person inside answering on the master station handset. If you need to see who is at the door before you release it, this is the wrong part and you want a video door station instead.
8) Can I wire the IE-SS/A door station straight to a door strike to unlock the door?
No. The IE-SS/A is a call and talk station only, with an SPST call button that signals the master. Door release is handled at the master station end of the system, not at this sub. Plan the strike or maglock circuit off the master, and run only the 2 conductor pair out to this station.
9) How many wires do I have to pull to an Aiphone IE-SS/A sub station?
Two conductors, and Aiphone calls for their #822202 cable. The station arrives with color-coded pigtails already attached, so the field connection is a splice in the gang box rather than a terminal strip. Run length limits come from the master system spec, so size the run against whichever AX or compatible master you are feeding it from.
