Metallics TS6701 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) What is the difference between a wedge anchor and a sleeve or drop-in anchor for concrete?
A wedge anchor, which is what the Metallics TS6701 is, is a one-piece stud with an expansion clip that grips as the nut is tightened. It goes in solid concrete only and is not removable. A sleeve anchor spreads load over a longer sleeve and is the choice for block or brick. A drop-in anchor sets flush and leaves an internal thread, so it is used where you need to take a bolt out and put it back, like overhead threaded rod. For heavy equipment bolted down once to a poured slab, the wedge anchor is the right type.
2) Can I use the 1 inch Metallics wedge anchor in concrete block or hollow masonry?
No. Wedge anchors, including the 1 inch TS6701, are for solid poured concrete. In hollow CMU the expansion clip has nothing to bear against and can blow through the cell wall. Use a sleeve anchor or a toggle-type masonry anchor in block.
3) How many anchors come in a box of Metallics TS6701?
Five anchors per box. If you are setting a run of equipment pads or structural standoffs, order by the box count rather than the piece, since the TS6701 is packaged as a box of 5.
4) Is a zinc plated wedge anchor like the TS6701 okay for outdoor or wet locations?
Zinc plating is a general purpose, indoor-dry or sheltered-use coating. The TS6701 is zinc plated, so for exterior exposure, washdown areas, or anywhere with standing moisture or chlorides, specify a hot dip galvanized or stainless wedge anchor instead.
5) Will a 9 inch wedge anchor work for mounting equipment through a thick base plate?
A 9 inch length gives you a long usable stickout above the concrete, which is what you need when you are anchoring through a thick base plate, a grout bed, or a steel shim stack. Figure your embedment first, then add plate thickness, grout, washer and nut. If your total stack-up is short, a 1 inch anchor in a shorter length is the better buy, since excess thread above the nut has to be cut or left exposed.
6) Is the TS6701 the same thing as a Metallics anchor part number TS6701 I have on a spec?
Yes, the manufacturer part number is TS6701 and it describes a 1 inch by 9 inch zinc plated wedge anchor from Metallics. If the spec sheet calls out that number, this is the item.
7) What size hole and what tools do I need to set a 1 inch wedge anchor?
Drill with a 1 inch carbide bit in a rotary hammer, since a wedge anchor uses a hole the same nominal diameter as the anchor. Blow or vacuum the dust out, drive the anchor so the clip is below the concrete surface, then torque the nut. A 1 inch diameter anchor is a heavy-duty size, so plan on an SDS-Max or spline hammer rather than a light SDS-Plus drill.
