Metallics JDP1 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Will a 1/2 inch long anchor work in drywall or hollow block?
No. At 1/2 inch, the JDP1 needs solid base material (poured concrete, solid brick, the solid web of block) to expand against. In drywall or the hollow cell of a block it has nothing to grip. Use a toggle or hollow wall anchor for those.
2) Can I remove a Metallics JDP1 drive pin anchor after it is set?
No. Drive pin anchors are a permanent, one-shot fastener. Once the pin is hammered home the body expands against the hole and it will not back out cleanly. If you need to take the fixture off later, use a screw-type anchor or a machine screw anchor instead of the JDP1.
3) What are hand drive pin anchors used for on an electrical job?
Hand drive pin anchors like the JDP1 fasten light loads to concrete, block, or brick: strap and one-hole straps for conduit, small boxes, raceway, device backing. You drill the hole, seat the anchor body, then drive the pin with a hammer to expand it. No setting tool and no screwdriving. Metallics catalogs them as electrical fasteners, which is where they get used most.
4) What drill bit do I need for a 1/4 inch drive pin anchor?
A 1/4 inch anchor takes a 1/4 inch carbide masonry bit, matched to the anchor diameter, drilled slightly deeper than the 1/2 inch anchor length so dust at the bottom does not stop the body from seating flush.
5) Will a zinc plated drive pin anchor hold up outdoors?
The JDP1 is zinc plated steel, which is a mild corrosion coating for dry interior work. For exterior walls, damp vaults, coastal air, or anywhere washdown reaches, go to a stainless fastener. Zinc plating will bleed rust in those conditions.
