Metallics J2522 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) What drill bit size do I need for a 1/4 inch sleeve anchor like the J2522?
Sleeve anchors are sized by hole diameter, so a 1/4 inch sleeve anchor goes into a 1/4 inch carbide hole drilled with a hammer drill. Drill deeper than the embedment you need so debris has somewhere to go, blow the hole clean, then set the anchor through the fixture and tighten the nut.
2) Can I use the Metallics J2522 in hollow block instead of solid concrete?
Sleeve anchors are one of the few expansion anchors that work in both solid concrete and hollow masonry, because the sleeve expands along its length rather than wedging at a single point. In hollow block, set it in the face shell and do not over-torque it, or you will crush the shell. For overhead or life-safety loads, follow the engineer's anchor schedule rather than a general purpose anchor choice.
3) Is the zinc plating on these anchors good enough for outdoor or damp locations?
The J2522 is zinc plated steel, which is a mild corrosion coating meant for dry interior and sheltered work. For exterior exposure, wet wells, pool rooms, coastal sites or anywhere washdown chemicals are present, specify a stainless sleeve anchor instead. Zinc plated carbon steel will bloom rust in those conditions.
4) Is the J2522 anchor sold individually or by the box?
It ships as a jar of 100 pieces, which is the pack most electrical contractors buy for strut and clamp work. One model is offered, J2522, so there is nothing further to specify when ordering.
5) What does the acorn nut head mean on this sleeve anchor?
The acorn nut is a domed cap nut on the end of the bolt, so once the anchor is tightened there is no exposed threaded stud sticking out. It is the version electricians and maintenance crews pick in finished or occupied spaces where a bare bolt end would snag wire, cable or hands. If you need to stack a second item on the stud later, a hex nut version is the better choice.
