Metallics JTS1134G – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Can I use the JTS1134G wedge anchor in block or brick instead of poured concrete?
Wedge anchors like the 1/4 x 2-1/4 JTS1134G are for solid poured concrete. They work by a expanding clip wedging against the wall of the hole, so hollow block, brick, mortar joints, and grout will not hold them reliably. For hollow masonry or drywall, use a sleeve anchor, toggle, or screw anchor instead.
2) Do the Metallics JTS1134G anchors come with nuts and washers?
Yes. A mechanically galvanized wedge anchor of this type is supplied assembled with its nut and washer on the threaded end, so each of the 100 pieces in the jar is ready to drive. You supply only the 1/4 inch masonry bit and a hammer, plus a wrench to torque the nut once it is seated.
3) Will a 1/4 x 2-1/4 wedge anchor hold Unistrut or conduit straps on a concrete ceiling?
That is the common use for this size. The JTS1134G gives you 2-1/4 inches of anchor to work with, so after a 1/4 inch strut channel wall and a nut and washer you still have plenty buried in the slab. Overhead work in concrete is exactly where this electrical-trade anchor gets specified, for strut, strap, box, and panel mounting.
4) Is the mechanically galvanized JTS1134G anchor OK for outdoor or damp locations?
Mechanical galvanizing gives a heavier zinc coating than plain electro-zinc, so the 1/4 x 2-1/4 JTS1134G holds up better than a plain-steel anchor in damp interiors, parking structures, and sheltered exterior concrete. For constant wetting, salt spray, or pool and coastal exposure, go to a stainless wedge anchor instead.
5) How close to the edge of a concrete slab can I set a 1/4 inch wedge anchor?
Keep back from the edge. A wedge anchor expands outward against the hole, so setting one near a slab edge or close to another anchor can crack the concrete and lose the hold. With the 1/4 inch JTS1134G, give yourself as much edge distance and anchor spacing as the layout allows, and never set one in a spalled or cracked area.
6) Can a wedge anchor be removed and reused once it is set?
No. The JTS1134G is a one-time anchor: driving it flares the expansion clip permanently into the concrete, so the nut can come off but the body stays in the hole. If you need something removable, use a sleeve anchor or a drop-in anchor with a machine bolt, where the bolt backs out and the anchor stays flush in the slab.
