Metallics CSH80SS – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Do I need an anchor shield or plastic plug to install the Metallics CSH80SS?
No. The CSH80SS is a concrete screw, so it threads directly into a pre-drilled hole in concrete or masonry with no plug, shield, or expansion sleeve. You drill the hole, blow it clean, and drive the screw with a hex driver on the indented hex washer head. That is what makes it faster than a sleeve or wedge anchor on repetitive electrical layout work.
2) Is the Metallics CSH80SS suitable for outdoor or damp electrical work?
It is a stainless steel concrete screw, which is the version to pick for exterior walls, parking structures, rooftop equipment, water-treatment and coastal sites where a plain carbon steel screw would rust and stain the concrete. Stainless also avoids galvanic trouble when you are fastening stainless or aluminum strut and clamps.
3) What head drive does the CSH80SS use, and do I need a special bit?
It uses an indented hex washer head, so it drives with a standard hex socket or nutsetter in an impact driver or drill, no Torx or Phillips bit required. The washer-style flange spreads the bearing load, which is what you want when fastening strut, conduit clamps, or panel feet to concrete without adding a separate flat washer.
4) Is 6 inches too long for fastening a conduit strap flat to a concrete wall?
Usually yes. At 1/4 x 6 the CSH80SS is meant for thick stand-off conditions, through furring, sleepers, or built-up material. For a strap or clamp sitting flat on concrete you want a much shorter screw in the same 1/4 inch diameter, since excess length only means a deeper hole and more drilling time with no added holding value.
5) Can I reuse a Metallics concrete screw if I have to take the fixture back off?
You can back a concrete screw out and reinstall it, but the threads it cut in the hole are already formed, so holding value drops each time. For a fixture that comes on and off regularly, set a threaded insert or an expansion anchor with a bolt instead and leave the concrete screw for fixed mounting.
