Metallics TS612 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) What size hole do I drill for a 3/4 inch wedge anchor like the Metallics TS612?
A 3/4 inch wedge anchor is set in a 3/4 inch diameter hole drilled with a carbide-tipped bit to ANSI tolerance. The anchor is driven through the fixture into the hole, so the hole through your base plate or bracket also needs to be 3/4 inch or slightly larger. Drill the hole deeper than the intended embedment so drill dust has somewhere to go.
2) Can a wedge anchor be used in hollow block or brick?
No. Wedge anchors like the 3/4 x 12 TS612 are for solid, poured concrete only. The wedge expands against the hole wall and needs the compressive strength of solid concrete; in hollow CMU or brick it will spall the cell wall or spin free. For hollow block use a sleeve anchor or a toggle designed for masonry voids.
3) Is zinc plated steel okay for outdoor or wet concrete anchoring?
The TS612 is zinc plated carbon steel, which is a dry interior finish. Zinc plating gives limited corrosion protection and will rust in standing water, exterior exposure, or chemically washed areas. For exterior slabs, pool decks, coastal sites, or wet process areas, use a stainless wedge anchor instead.
4) How much of a 3/4 x 12 inch wedge anchor sticks out of the concrete?
The 12 inch overall length is split between embedment and the stud you leave exposed, so you choose the balance. Set the embedment first to whatever depth your fixture load calls for, and whatever remains above the slab has to cover the thickness of the base plate plus the washer and nut. Because 12 inches is a long anchor, confirm your slab or footing is thick enough to take the embedment with concrete left below the anchor.
5) Can I reuse or back out a Metallics TS612 wedge anchor after it is set?
No. Once the nut is torqued and the clip expands, a wedge anchor is permanently set. The nut and washer can come off to swap the fixture, but the body stays in the concrete. If you have to remove it, drive it below the surface and patch, or cut it flush. Order spares on a job, since the box only contains 5 anchors.
6) Does the Metallics TS612 anchor come with a nut and washer?
Wedge anchors in this style ship complete with the nut and washer threaded onto the stud, which is what you tighten to draw the wedge clip against the concrete. Nothing else is supplied; you provide the carbide drill bit, a blow-out bulb or vacuum to clean the hole, and a torque wrench to set the nut.
