Metallics JTS6614 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Are the Metallics JTS6614 wedge anchors zinc plated or stainless?
Steel with zinc plating, not stainless. Zinc plated carbon steel is fine for dry interior concrete, mechanical rooms, and covered slabs. For exterior slabs, wash-down areas, or anything with chloride exposure, specify a stainless wedge anchor instead, because zinc plating is a sacrificial coating and will corrode once it is wet long term.
2) Can wedge anchors like the Metallics JTS6614 be used in hollow block or brick?
No. Wedge anchors are solid concrete anchors only. They set by expanding a clip against the wall of the drilled hole, which requires solid base material. In hollow CMU, brick, or grout-filled cells you want a sleeve anchor, a screw anchor rated for block, or a through-bolt instead. Using the 3/4 inch wedge anchor in a hollow cell will spin and never develop hold.
3) How many anchors come in a jar of Metallics JTS6614?
Ten anchors per jar. It ships as a jar pack, so for a run of equipment pads, strut supports, or transformer mounts you want to count your hole locations and order jars in multiples of 10 rather than by the piece.
4) Will a 6-1/4 inch long wedge anchor work for mounting through a thick base plate?
The 6-1/4 inch length on the JTS6614 is what gives you fixture clearance. Of that total length, part is embedment into the concrete and the rest is the stick-out needed to pass through your base plate plus a washer and nut. The longer 6-1/4 inch body is normally chosen for thick plates, grout beds, or where you need deeper embedment in the slab; for thin angle or strut you would be better off with a shorter 3/4 inch anchor so you are not left with excess thread above the nut.
5) What is included with the Metallics JTS6614 wedge anchors, and do I need to buy nuts and washers?
Wedge anchors in this style come assembled with their own nut and washer on the threaded end, so the anchor is complete as supplied. What is not included is the carbide drill bit, and you will need a 3/4 inch bit plus a hammer drill, a blow-out bulb or vacuum to clear the hole, and a torque wrench if the job is spec'd to a setting torque.
6) How far from the slab edge can I set a 3/4 inch wedge anchor?
Edge distance and spacing drive whether a 3/4 inch wedge anchor holds at all. The expansion force of the clip can crack concrete if the anchor is set too close to a free edge or too near its neighbour, which is why base plate layouts get checked against the manufacturer's published edge and spacing minimums and against the slab thickness. If your layout is tight to an edge, move the hole or switch to an adhesive anchor, which tolerates closer edge conditions because it does not expand.
7) Can the Metallics JTS6614 anchor be removed and reused after it is set?
No, it is a one-time set anchor. Once the wedge clip expands in the hole the body stays, and the common practice is to back the nut off, drive the anchor below the surface, and patch, or cut it flush. If you need a removable connection in the slab, use a drop-in anchor with a threaded insert and a separate bolt so the bolt can come out.
8) Is the Metallics JTS6614 the same thing as a 3/4 inch Red Head or Kwik Bolt?
Same category of anchor, different manufacturer. The JTS6614 is Metallics' 3/4 by 6-1/4 inch zinc plated wedge anchor. Wedge anchors from different makers share the basic setting method and hole diameter, but published load values, embedment requirements, and code report listings are specific to each brand, so if a drawing calls out a particular manufacturer's anchor by name, the substitution has to be approved rather than assumed.
