Metallics TS505G – Frequently Asked Questions
1) What hole diameter do I drill for a 5/8 inch wedge anchor?
Wedge anchors are drilled at the same nominal diameter as the anchor, so a 5/8 inch wedge anchor like the TS505G takes a 5/8 inch carbide hammer-drill bit. The hole must be drilled deeper than the embedment you intend so the anchor can be driven flush and the debris cleared.
2) Will a 5 inch long wedge anchor work for mounting through a thick base plate or strut channel?
The 5 inch overall length on the TS505G covers the fixture thickness plus the nut and washer plus the concrete embedment, so the usable embedment is 5 inches minus whatever you are clamping. Through a thick base plate or a stacked strut and washer you lose a lot of that length, so add up your fixture thickness first and step to a longer 5/8 anchor if the remaining embedment is short.
3) Can I use the Metallics TS505G 5/8 x 5 galvanized wedge anchor outdoors or in damp locations?
Hot-dip galvanized is the finish on the TS505G, which is the coating specified for exterior and damp exposure, so it suits outdoor slabs, loading docks, exterior strut and equipment pads rather than plain zinc anchors kept indoors.
4) Is this a concrete-only anchor, or can I use it in block or brick?
Wedge anchors such as the 5/8 x 5 TS505G are for solid concrete. Hollow block and brick walls flex and crush at the cone, so use a sleeve anchor or a screen tube and adhesive there instead.
5) Do I need anything else besides the anchor itself to install the TS505G?
Nut and washer come assembled on each wedge anchor, so the box of 25 is complete as a fastener. What you supply is a 5/8 inch carbide bit for a rotary hammer, a blow-out bulb or vacuum to clear the hole, and a torque wrench to pull the anchor up to the nut torque. Nothing on the fixture side is included.
6) Can I remove a wedge anchor later if the equipment gets relocated?
No. The 5/8 x 5 wedge anchor expands permanently in the hole once the nut is torqued. You can back the nut off and remove the fixture, but the anchor body stays in the concrete, and it has to be cut or driven flush. If you need the ability to unbolt and rebolt in the same hole, use a threaded insert or a drop-in anchor instead.
