The Appleton™ ATX™ JBEP Series is a line of increased safety, fiberglass reinforced polyester (FRP) terminal junction boxes built for electrical and power applications in Zone 1 and 2 (gas) and Zone 21 and 22 (dust) hazardous locations. 1) Can I use an Appleton ATX JBEP junction box in a Zone 1 gas area, or is it dust only?
Both. The ATX JBEP Series is an increased safety enclosure rated for Zone 1 and 2 areas with flammable gases or vapors and Zone 21 and 22 areas with flammable dusts. Under NEC/CEC it carries Class I, Zone 1, AEx e IIC, T5 or T6, and under ATEX/IECEx it is Ex II 2 GD. So one box covers gas and dust classified areas in the same plant.
2) Will an FRP terminal box like the ATX JBEP hold up outdoors in a washdown or corrosive area?
Yes. The enclosure is static resistant carbon filled fiberglass reinforced polyester with stainless steel hardware, and it is IP66 rated for indoor or outdoor use in wet or corrosive atmospheres. That is why it shows up in food processing, dairy, brewing, petroleum, chemical and refinery installations where a painted steel box would corrode.
3) What ambient temperature can the Appleton ATX JBEP box be installed in, and does the temperature class change?
Ambient range is -55 C to +60 C (-67 F to +140 F). The temperature class shifts with ambient: in Zones 1 and 2 it is T6 up to +40 C and T5 up to +60 C. In Zones 21 and 22 the surface temperature is T60 C (140 F) for ambient at or below +40 C, and T90 C (194 F) for ambient at or below +60 C. If your area classification demands T6, you have to keep ambient at or below 40 C.
4) What wire sizes will the terminals in the ATX JBEP box accept?
Terminals are supplied from 2.5 mm2 (14 AWG) up through 240 mm2 (474 MCM), in multiple configurations, so the same series covers small lighting circuits and heavy motor or distribution feeders. Boxes come factory drilled with pillar, miniature, or screw terminals and are set up for both armored and un-armored cable.
5) Do I need to drill my own cable entries in the Appleton ATX JBEP enclosure?
No. These boxes ship factory drilled and fitted with terminals, which keeps the increased safety certification intact. Removable gland plates are also available as an option if you want to prep entries separately. Field drilling a certified Ex e enclosure is what voids it, so order the entry arrangement you need.
6) Is there a hinged-door version of the ATX JBEP terminal box for panels I have to open often?
Yes, external hinges are available on specific sizes. The hinged door is reversible and opens to 120 degrees, and you can add a double bar lock and/or a key locking facility. For a box you open routinely for terminations or troubleshooting, that beats handling a loose cover on a ladder.

Increased safety works by preventing arcs, sparks and hot surfaces in the first place, using certified terminals and sealed FRP construction, which is why it suits terminal and distribution duty in Zone 1, 2, 21 and 22. Switching or arcing devices call for a different protection concept.
9) What gasket material is used, and does it differ by box size?
It does. The 85 x 85 and 120 x 120 sizes use a silicone gasket; the other sizes use EPDM. Both support the IP66 seal, but if you are matching gasket chemical compatibility to a process area, check which size you are specifying.
