1) Can the Appleton GRJT conduit outlet box be used in a Class I Division 1 hazardous area?
Yes. The GRJT Series outlet box is explosionproof and dust-ignitionproof, rated for Class I, Division 1 and 2, Groups A, B, C and D; Class II, Division 1 and 2, Groups E, F and G; and Class III locations. That covers most refinery, chemical, grain handling and fine-dust process areas where a standard cast condulet body would not be acceptable.
2) What trade sizes does the Appleton GRJT outlet box come in?
Two: 1/2 inch as the GRJT50 and 3/4 inch as the GRJT75. The hubs are internally threaded, so you order the size to match your threaded rigid or IMC run rather than adapting with bushings.
3) Is the GRJT box suitable for outdoor wet locations, or do I need a separate enclosure?
It is built for outdoor use as supplied. Standard O-rings give a raintight seal meeting NEMA 3 and 4, and the malleable iron body carries a triple coat of zinc electroplate, chromate and epoxy powder for corrosion resistance. No secondary weather enclosure is needed for rain or washdown exposure.
4) Does the Appleton GRJT come with a cover, or is that a separate order?
The cover ships with the box. It is copper-free aluminum (4/10 of 1 percent max) with an epoxy powder coat finish, and it threads externally into the body for a rigid, tight joint. An internal ground screw and the O-ring are also furnished standard, so the only thing you supply is the conduit and conductors.
5) Why use a threaded explosionproof outlet box instead of a standard sheet metal junction box in a classified area?
In a classified location the enclosure has to contain an internal ignition and keep the flame path within limits, which a sheet metal box with locknut connections cannot do. The GRJT uses an internally threaded body with an externally threaded cover so the joint with rigid threaded metal conduit is tight and rigid, and the internal ground screw maintains ground continuity through the fitting. Use it as a pull point, a maintenance access point, or where you change conduit direction.
6) Will pulling wire through this box damage the conductor insulation?
Each hub has a smooth, rounded integral bushing that protects conductor insulation as you pull, so no separate insulating bushing is required at the box.
7) Is malleable iron a better choice than aluminum for a conduit body in a corrosive plant?
Malleable iron gives high tensile strength and ductility with good resistance to impact and shock, and on the GRJT it is protected by zinc electroplate, chromate and epoxy powder coat. That combination suits mechanical-abuse areas and corrosion-prone outdoor installations. Aluminum bodies are lighter and often preferred where weight matters, but they do not match iron for impact resistance.
