1) What hazardous location classes is the Appleton GRJ conduit outlet box rated for?
Class I, Division 1 and 2, Groups C and D; Class II, Division 1 and 2, Groups E, F and G; and Class III. It is rated explosionproof, dust-ignitionproof and raintight. Note there is no Group A or B listing, so an acetylene or hydrogen atmosphere is outside its rating.
2) Do I have to buy the cover separately for the Appleton GRJ outlet box?
No. Each GRJ outlet box ships complete with its matching cover. An internal ground screw is also furnished. What you supply is the threaded rigid metal conduit and your conductors.
3) Will this work with EMT or does it need rigid threaded conduit?
Threaded metal conduit only. The hubs are accurately tapped with tapered threads to form a tight, rigid joint and maintain ground continuity, which is how the explosionproof rating is achieved. Plain-end EMT with setscrew or compression connectors is not an acceptable connection here.
4) Can this box be used outdoors or in a washdown area?
Yes. The GRJ box is raintight and built for both indoor and outdoor classified locations. The malleable iron body carries a triple-coat finish, zinc electroplate over chromate over epoxy powder coat, which is what makes it suitable for corrosion-prone industrial areas. The body is externally threaded and the cover internally threaded, so the joint itself seals when the cover is run down tight.
5) Is a GRJ conduit outlet box a junction box or a pull point?
Think of it as a small round access fitting rather than a device box.
