Appleton GRHL Series conduit outlet boxes are explosionproof, dust-ignitionproof enclosures built with a malleable iron body for use in indoor and outdoor classified locations. 2) Can the GRHL box be installed outdoors or in a washdown area?
Yes. Standard O-rings are furnished with every box and give a raintight NEMA 3, 4 fit, so the GRHL is rated for indoor and outdoor classified locations. Keep the O-ring in place when reassembling the cover, otherwise the raintight rating is gone.
3) What hub sizes does the Appleton GRHL outlet box come in?
Two hub trade sizes: 1/2 inch (GRHL50) and 3/4 inch (GRHL75). Hubs are internally threaded with accurately tapped tapered threads, so they take rigid threaded metal conduit of the matching trade size. If your run is 1 inch or larger you need a different body.
4) Is GRHL the same thing as GRHLB, or do I need to pick a body shape?
They are different parts, not different sizes. GRHL is a Type L body configuration; GRHLB is a back-outlet LB body style using the industry-standard LB conduit body shape. Both share the same cover and capacity spec, but the outlet geometry differs, so the shape has to match the direction your conduit run needs to turn.
5) Does the Appleton GRHL box come with a cover, or is that ordered separately?
Covers are furnished with the box. The cover is externally threaded copper-free aluminum (4/10 of 1 percent max copper) with an epoxy powder coat, and it threads into the internally threaded malleable iron body for a tight, rigid joint that maintains ground continuity.
6) How does the GRHL box handle equipment grounding?
An internal ground screw is standard on every GRHL box, so you can land an equipment grounding conductor inside the enclosure. The tapered threaded hub joints also carry ground continuity through the conduit system itself.
7) Will a malleable iron conduit box hold up in a corrosive plant environment?
The GRHL body is malleable iron with a triple-coat finish: zinc electroplate, then chromate, then epoxy powder coat. Malleable iron gives the tensile strength and ductility to take impact and shock in traffic areas, and the coating stack is what handles corrosion. For badly corrosive chemical service, copper-free aluminum or stainless bodies are the usual step up.
8) Can I use the GRHL box as a pull point and direction change in an explosionproof conduit run?
