Appleton EDS Series factory sealed tumbler switches are explosionproof, dust-ignitionproof switches designed to confine the arcing of enclosed switches, preventing ignition of ignitable atmospheres during connect and disconnect operation of lighting and light power loads. 1) Can the Appleton EDS Series tumbler switch be used in a Class I, Division 1 hazardous area?
Yes. The Appleton EDS Series factory-sealed tumbler switch is certified for Class I, Division 1 and 2, Groups B, C, D; Class II, Division 1 and 2, Groups E, F, G; and Class III, with NEMA 3, 7 BCD and 9EFG enclosure ratings. The 1/2 inch and 3/4 inch 1-gang units are suitable for Class I, Group B as well as Groups C and D, which is what you need if hydrogen is in the atmosphere.
2) Do I need to install a separate conduit seal with the Appleton EDS switch?
No separate seal fitting is needed at the switch. The EDS is a factory-sealed design: the sealing chamber comes with prewired factory sealed pigtail leads running to the switch, so the arcing contacts are already contained in an explosionproof labyrinth switch assembly built to UL Standard. That saves you a poured seal at the device, though your own conduit run still has to follow whatever the classified-area drawing calls for elsewhere.
3) Will the Appleton EDS switch hold up outdoors in a corrosive refinery environment?
It is built for it. Body and cover are malleable iron with a triple-coat finish of zinc electroplate, chromate, then epoxy powder coat. Cover, body and sealing chamber are pulled together with corrosion resistant stainless steel hex head cap screws, and the operating handle is threaded stainless steel. Select models use a copperfree aluminum sealing chamber (4/10 of 1 percent max copper), which matters in atmospheres where copper attack is a concern. The NEMA 3 rating covers rain and weather exposure.
4) What conduit hub size does the Appleton EDS175-F1 tumbler switch take?
