Appleton U-Line Contender Factory Sealed 20 Amp Plugs and Receptacles deliver a dead-front design engineered for electrical equipment in hazardous locations. Rated 125 Vac or 250 Vac at 20A with 3-pole, 2-wire configuration, each receptacle is not energized until the plug is fully inserted and the switch is engaged. 1) Is the Appleton GFS1 a complete GFCI receptacle assembly or just the cover?
GFS1 is a cover only. It's a Contender-series factory-sealed GFCI cover, copper-free cast aluminum, 5 mA trip, 125 VAC, 20A, that installs into a standard Contender mounting box. You do not get a plug-and-receptacle set with it. If you need a complete ready-to-install set, look at the ECSK-2023 or EFSR-2023M.
2) Which mounting boxes can I use with the Appleton GFS1 GFCI cover?
It mounts on Contender Series boxes and on Crouse-Hinds EDS series boxes. The distinction matters for your inspector: the cover is UL Listed when used with Contender Series mounting boxes, and UL Classified when used with Crouse-Hinds EDS series boxes. If your spec calls for UL Listed, stay with the Contender box.
3) What hazardous location classes is the Appleton Contender GFCI cover rated for?
The rating covers Class I, Groups C and D; Class I, Division 2, Group B; Class I, Zone 1, Group IIB; Class I, Zone 2, Group IIB + H2; Class II, Groups F and G; and Class III. Enclosure ratings are NEMA 3RX, 7CD and 9FG, so it is suited to wet and corrosive outdoor areas as well as classified interiors. Note there is no Group A or Group B Division 1 listing, so acetylene or hydrogen Division 1 areas are out.
4) Can I use the GFS1 GFCI cover on a 250 volt circuit?
No. The GFS1 GFCI cover itself is a 125 VAC, 20A device with a 5 mA trip. The U-Line Contender family as a whole is rated 125 or 250 Vac at 20A, 3-pole, 2-wire, but the GFCI cover is the 125 VAC part of that range. For a 250 volt hookup you need a non-GFCI cover and receptacle combination from the same series.
5) Will an ordinary NEMA 5-20 plug energize a U-Line Contender receptacle?
No, and that is deliberate. U-Line receptacles are built so they cannot be energized by an ordinary plug. The design is dead front: the receptacle stays de-energized until the plug is fully inserted and the switch is engaged, which cuts arc-flash exposure. The traffic goes the other way though, an ECP plug will fit a standard non-explosionproof NEMA 5-20R or 6-20R receptacle as well as U-Line explosionproof receptacles.
6) How does the Contender cover keep water and dust out of the receptacle?
There's a neoprene gasket in the throat of the receptacle. It seals either against the inserted plug or against the spring-loaded cover when nothing is plugged in, blocking water, dust and corrosive compounds. That is what backs the NEMA 3RX rating for wet and corrosive outdoor locations.
7) What is the Appleton Contender cover made of, and will it hold up in a chemical plant?
Standard receptacle covers, including the GFS1, are copper-free cast aluminum with an epoxy powder coat finish. Mounting boxes are malleable iron with a triple-coat finish of zinc electroplate, chromate and epoxy powder coat. Insulator blocks are glass-filled reinforced polyester for dielectric and mechanical strength with low arc tracking. Copper-free aluminum is the material specified for refinery and petrochemical service.
8) What cable diameter does the Contender plug accept?
Plug cable diameter range is .538 to .639 inches. Check your cord jacket OD against that before ordering, an oversized SOOW jacket will not seat in the grip.
