Arrow FS-37-01-E-32D-RR – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Will the Arrow 3700 Series surface vertical rod exit device fit a 1-3/8 inch door?
No. The Arrow 3700 Series is built for a single door thickness, 1-3/4 inches, with both the minimum and maximum stated at that figure. On a 1-3/8 inch leaf the chassis mounting and rod hardware will not land correctly, so you need a device rated for the thinner door instead.
2) Is the Arrow 3700 exit device handed, and how do I order the right hand?
Handing matters here. The 3700 Series is a handed device, and the 30 inch version is ordered as either LR (left hand reverse) or RR (right hand reverse). Exit doors swing out, so reverse bevel handings are what you will be specifying. If you want to avoid the handing call entirely, a non-handed or reversible device like the Von Duprin 2227 or the Sargent 2727 removes that decision.
3) What is the closest fire rated alternative to the Arrow 3700 surface vertical rod device?
Two straight equivalents in wide stile and fire rated: the Adams Rite 3100 Series 30 inch device, which is also Grade 1 and 1-3/4 inch door thickness, and the TownSteel EF9727, a heavy duty Grade 1 fire rated device in 36 inch. Most of the other wide stile Grade 1 devices we carry, including the Von Duprin 2227 and Falcon 25-V-EO, are not fire rated, so they will not substitute on a labeled opening.
4) Will the Arrow 3700 secure a pair of doors without a center mullion?
That is what a surface vertical rod device is for. The 3700 latches at the head and at the threshold rather than into a strike on the jamb, so a pair of doors can be held closed with no center mullion in the way. If you would rather keep a mullion and use rim devices, that is a different device type, not this one.
5) Does the Arrow 3700 exit only device have outside trim or a cylinder?
It is an exit only device, so there is no outside operating trim on it. Entry from outside is by key only if you add a cylinder, and the 3700 accepts conventional and small format cylinders. If your opening needs an outside lever that retracts the latches, look at a device catalogued as accepting operator trim, such as the Corbin Russwin ED5400.
6) Will the Arrow 3700 wide stile exit device fit an aluminum narrow stile storefront door?
No. The Arrow 3700 FS-37-01 is a wide stile device, with a stile width of 4-1/2 inches with trim and 3-1/2 inches without. For a narrow stile aluminum door, look at a device built for that profile, such as the Adams Rite 8200 Series 30 inch narrow stile surface vertical rod device, the Von Duprin 3327A narrow stile device for 36 inch doors, or the Corbin Russwin ED4400 Grade 1 36 inch narrow stile device.
7) I need the device to accept an outside lever or pull trim - does the Arrow 3700 FS-37-01 do that?
The Arrow 3700 FS-37-01 is configured exit only, so egress is by pushpad with no outside operating trim function. If the opening needs keyed or lever entry from the pull side, the Corbin Russwin ED5400 is a Grade 1 wide stile surface vertical rod device listed as exit only and accepts trim, and the Corbin Russwin ED7400 is a narrow stile crossbar version that accepts operator trim. Both are for 1-3/4 inch doors.
8) Will the Arrow 3700 latch pick up my existing top and bottom strikes?
The latchbolts throw 3/4 inch. Existing top and bottom strikes cut for a 3/4 inch throw surface vertical rod device will generally take it, but strike locations on vertical rod hardware vary between manufacturers, so plan on the strikes supplied with the device unless the old prep matches.
9) Is the Arrow 3700 Grade 1 and ADA compliant for a school or healthcare corridor?
Yes. The Arrow 3700 Series is BHMA certified to ANSI/BHMA A156.3 Grade 1 and meets ANSI/BHMA A117.1 for accessibility, plus NFPA 101. That covers the usual specification language for institutional egress hardware. The chassis is a non-ferrous alloy with a brass, bronze or stainless cover.
10) Can I put the Arrow 3700 exit bar on a wood door?
Yes, the 3700 Series is offered for both wood and metal doors, as long as the leaf is 1-3/4 inches thick. Another fire rated wide stile option confirmed for wood doors is the TownSteel EF9727 in the 9700 Series.
11) Is the Sargent 12-8710 a substitute for the Arrow 3700 exit bar?
It is not an operating substitute. The Sargent 12-8710 is a fire rated Grade 1 wide stile surface vertical rod device in a dummy function, meaning it does not latch or release - it is used on the inactive leaf or where a matching appearance is wanted without operation. The Arrow 3700 FS-37-01 is an exit only device that actually releases the latches on push. Match function first, then appearance.
12) What is the difference between the Arrow 3700 and the Falcon 25-V-EO wide stile vertical rod device?
Both are Grade 1 wide stile surface vertical rod exit only devices for 1-3/4 inch doors. The difference that decides the order is the label: the Arrow 3700 FS-37-01 is fire rated, while the Falcon 25-V-EO in the 3 foot length is not. Use the Arrow on a labeled opening; the Falcon 25 suits a non-rated egress door. Falcon also lists the 20 Series in a 36 inch wide stile Grade 1 exit only version, likewise non-rated.
13) The Arrow 3700 is handed - is there a non-handed or reversible vertical rod device instead?
The Arrow 3700 FS-37-01 is ordered by hand, in left hand reverse or right hand reverse. If you would rather stock one device that covers either swing, the Sargent 2727 is a reversible Grade 1 fire rated wide stile surface vertical rod device, and the Von Duprin 2227-3FT is a non-handed Grade 1 wide stile device for 36 inch doors, though it is not fire rated. The BEST Precision 5201 in 36 inch is also reversible and non-rated.
14) Is a Grade 2 vertical rod device an acceptable step down from the Arrow 3700?
The Arrow 3700 FS-37-01 is certified to ANSI/BHMA A156.3 Grade 1, which is what most institutional and high traffic specifications call for. If the opening is lower traffic and the spec allows Grade 2, the TownSteel TS5100 Series in 36 by 84 is a heavy duty Grade 2 wide stile surface vertical rod device, and the Dexter ED2000 Series is a Grade 2 surface vertical rod panic device. Both are non-rated, so neither works on a labeled fire door.
15) Can I use a less bottom rod device in place of the Arrow 3700 to avoid the floor strike?
The Arrow 3700 FS-37-01 is a surface vertical rod device with a 3/4 inch latch throw, supplied with top and bottom rod hardware. If you want to eliminate the bottom rod and floor strike in a wet or high traffic doorway, the Orca Hardware OED56 Series 36 inch is a standard duty vertical rod exit device supplied less bottom rod, non-handed, in aluminum finish for 1-3/4 inch doors. Note it is not fire rated, so it cannot replace the Arrow on a labeled opening.
16) What finishes does the Arrow 3700 30 inch exit bar come in, and can I match existing hardware?
Six finishes on the 30 inch device: 605 bright brass, 606 satin brass, 612 satin bronze, 613E dark oxidized satin bronze equivalent, 629 bright stainless, and 630 satin stainless. For a building already standardized on satin stainless trim, 630 is the usual match; 613E is the one to pick against dark bronze storefront.
17) We want to standardize vertical rod exit devices across a building with both rated and non-rated openings - how do we pair the Arrow 3700?
Run the Arrow 3700 FS-37-01 on the labeled openings, since it is fire rated, Grade 1 wide stile, and carries ANSI/BHMA A117.1 and A156.3 Grade 1. For the non-rated wide stile openings in the same building, the Adams Rite 8100 Series 30 inch and the TownSteel ED8927 in 36 by 84 are both Grade 1 wide stile surface vertical rod devices. Keeping every device wide stile and Grade 1 keeps the pushpad look and the maintenance parts consistent across the fleet.
