Baldwin BAL-0404.003 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Is the Baldwin 0404 release trim suitable for a commercial building or apartment corridor?
It is a residential-rated item. For a commercial corridor or a code-driven opening in a school, hospital or office, specify commercial-grade trim instead. The 0404 is the right part for houses, condo interiors and high-end multi-family unit interiors where the look matters.
2) Is the Baldwin 0404 a complete privacy lock or just the outside plate?
Just the trim side. The 0404 is a back plate with the emergency release, supplied with the 6701 cover and 041 key. The latch and the inside privacy turn are separate, so order those with it if you are building up a door from scratch rather than replacing worn trim.
3) What finishes does the Baldwin 0404 oval emergency release trim come in?
Fourteen finishes: 003 Polished Brass, 031 Non-Lacquered Brass, 033 Vintage Brass, 044 Satin Brass, 050 Satin Brass and Black, 055 Polished Nickel, 056 Satin Nickel, 060 Satin Brass and Brown, 076 Graphite Nickel, 102 Oil Rubbed Bronze, 112 (11P) Venetian Bronze, 190 Satin Black, 260 Polished Chrome, and 402 Distressed Oil Rubbed Bronze. That spread is wide enough to match most Baldwin knobs and levers already hanging in a house, so a property manager replacing one door can usually keep the rest of the floor consistent.
4) Do I need a key to use the Baldwin 0404, and does one come with it?
No cylinder and no keyway are involved, this is not a keyed product. The emergency release tool, Baldwin's 041 key, is included with the trim, so nothing separate has to be ordered to operate it.
5) Will the Baldwin 0404 oval trim fit my existing door prep?
Baldwin publishes a drilling template for the 0404, linked from the product information, and that drawing is what you check your existing bore against. Because it is a back plate and release trim rather than a complete lockset, the plate has to line up with the prep already in the door.
6) Does the 056 Satin Nickel version of this Baldwin trim hold up in a damp bathroom?
Baldwin's Lifetime Satin Nickel is nickel plating over solid brass, applied as a PVD finish, which is why it is described as extremely durable. Solid brass under the plating is the part that matters on a bathroom door that sees steam every day.
7) Will the 0404 oval trim look right with traditional or modern knobs?
Baldwin styles the 0404 as transitional, a mix of traditional and modern lines in an oval plate, which is why it reads well alongside either. Matching the finish code to the knobs already on the door matters more than the style call.
