Baldwin BAL-0407.003 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Does the Baldwin 0407 come with the emergency release key, or do I order that separately?
The release key is included. The 0407 ships with the 0417 emergency release key and the 6701 cover, so nothing extra is needed to operate the release. Property managers stocking spares usually keep a few loose 0417 keys at the office anyway, since the small flat keys get lost.
2) Is the Baldwin 0407 a keyed lock I can use on an entry door?
No. The 0407 is release trim with an emergency release, not a keyed entry function, and Baldwin lists it as non-keyed. For an exterior door you need a keyed entry set or a deadbolt instead. The 0407 belongs on interior privacy openings.
3) What finishes does the Baldwin 0407 emergency release trim come in?
Fourteen finishes: Polished Brass (003), Non-Lacquered Brass (031), Vintage Brass (033), Satin Brass (044), Satin Brass and Black (050), Polished Nickel (055), Satin Nickel (056), Satin Brass and Brown (060), Graphite Nickel (076), Oil Rubbed Bronze (102), Venetian Bronze (112/11P), Satin Black (190), Polished Chrome (260) and Distressed Oil Rubbed Bronze (402). If you are matching existing Baldwin hardware in a house, order by that number rather than by the finish name, since several of the brass tones read similarly in photos.
4) Is the Baldwin 0407 release trim rated for commercial door traffic?
It is a residential-grade item. Baldwin catalogues the 0407 for residential use, so for a school, hospital or multi-family corridor where a graded privacy set is specified, this is the wrong trim to put on the door.
5) Do I need a drilling template to install the Baldwin 0407 release trim?
Baldwin publishes a drilling template for the 0407, and it is worth pulling before you bore. The release trim has its own prep for the emergency release opening in addition to the standard cross bore, so laying it out by eye off an existing rose is how people end up with an off-center release.
6) I am replacing one Baldwin knob rose in a house full of them. Will the 0407 match?
The 0407 rose is round with Baldwin's rounded profile, so it reads consistently with the rest of their contemporary rose trim. Matching comes down to two things: the finish number and the rose shape. Pull the number off the back of an existing plate and order the 0407 in that same number, and confirm the door you are working on is a privacy opening, since the 0407 carries the emergency release rather than a plain blank rose.
7) Will the satin nickel Baldwin 0407 hold up in a humid bathroom?
The 056 Satin Nickel is nickel plating over solid brass, applied as a PVD finish, which is why Baldwin treats it as their durable satin option. Solid brass underneath rather than plated zinc is the part that matters on a bath door that sees steam daily.
