Baldwin BAL-0422.003 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Does the Baldwin 0422 take a regular key or a cylinder?
Neither. The 0422 is unkeyed, so there is no cylinder and no keyway to match to your house key. Entry from outside is by the flat 0417 emergency release key that comes with it, which is the kind of tool you keep above the door frame for a locked bathroom.
2) Is the 0422 a complete privacy set or just the outside plate?
It is the trim side: the 0422 Lakeshore backplate with the 0417 emergency key and 6701 cover. You still need the knob or lever and the privacy latch to complete the opening, so order those alongside it rather than expecting a full set in the box.
3) What finishes does the Baldwin 0422 Lakeshore emergency release trim come in?
Fourteen finishes, which covers most Baldwin door hardware suites: 003 Polished Brass, 031 Non-Lacquered Brass, 033 Vintage Brass, 044 Satin Brass, 050 Satin Brass and Black, 055 Polished Nickel, 056 Satin Nickel, 060 Satin Brass and Brown, 076 Graphite Nickel, 102 Oil Rubbed Bronze, 112 Venetian Bronze, 190 Satin Black, 260 Polished Chrome, and 402 Distressed Oil Rubbed Bronze. If you are matching other doors in the same house, order by that number rather than by the finish name.
4) Is the Baldwin 0422 Lakeshore trim rated for commercial use?
Baldwin lists the 0422 Lakeshore as residential hardware. For apartments, single family homes, and hospitality-style guest rooms it is on spec; for a commercial opening that has to meet a facility hardware standard, specify a commercial privacy set instead.
5) How far does the Baldwin 0422 trim stick out from the door face?
Projection is 0.38 inch, so a little over 3/8 of an inch off the door face. That matters where a door swings against a wall or a piece of casing sits tight to the opening.
6) How is Baldwin's 056 Satin Nickel finish made, and will it hold up?
The 056 Satin Nickel is nickel plating over solid brass, finished as a matte PVD coating. You get the silver tone with the mass of a brass substrate underneath, and PVD is a hard, wear-resistant surface rather than a lacquer that can chip off.
7) Will the square Baldwin 0422 plate match rosette-style hardware already on my other doors?
The 0422 Lakeshore is a squared plate with a smooth face, styled as transitional, so it reads between traditional and modern. It will not line up visually with round rosettes or heavily ornamented Victorian plates. If the rest of the house is on square or rectangular Baldwin backplates, it sits with them; matching the finish number is the other half of that.
