Baldwin BAL-0423.003 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Is the Baldwin 0423 square trim keyed, or does it use a key blank I have to cut?
No cylinder and no keying. The 0423 is non-keyed trim; the emergency release is operated by the 0417 release tool that comes with it, not by a cut key. If you need a keyed entry escutcheon, this is not the part.
2) Is the Baldwin 0423 trim a complete lock, or do I still need a knob and latch?
It is trim only, a square backplate with the emergency release, not a lockset. You still need the privacy knob or lever, spindle and latch to complete the opening. Buyers replacing a damaged plate on an existing Baldwin privacy set are the usual case here.
3) What finishes does the Baldwin 0423 square emergency release trim come in?
Fourteen finishes: Polished Brass 003, Non-Lacquered Brass 031, Vintage Brass 033, Satin Brass 044, Satin Brass and Black 050, Polished Nickel 055, Satin Nickel 056, Satin Brass and Brown 060, Graphite Nickel 076, Oil Rubbed Bronze 102, Venetian Bronze 112, Satin Black 190, Polished Chrome 260 and Distressed Oil Rubbed Bronze 402. Property managers matching a building standard should order by that number, since several brass tones read very differently in person.
4) Is the Baldwin 0423 rated for commercial door traffic?
Baldwin lists the 0423 as residential. For apartments, single-family and light hospitality guest rooms it is the right class of product; for a high-traffic commercial restroom or an institutional corridor, specify commercial-grade privacy hardware instead.
5) Will the square 0423 trim match rounded Baldwin plates already on my other doors?
No. The 0423 is a contemporary square plate measuring 2 by 2 inches at the trim, so it reads as a distinctly squared, transitional look against round or oval escutcheons. If the rest of the doors carry round trim, either change them all or pick a round emergency release plate.
6) Will the Satin Nickel version of this Baldwin trim wear through on a busy door?
The 056 Satin Nickel is nickel plated over solid brass and applied as a PVD finish, which is the harder of Baldwin's finish processes. Non-Lacquered Brass 031 behaves the opposite way: it is meant to patina and will darken with handling.
