Baldwin BAL-0405.003 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Is the Baldwin 0405 a knob or just the plate behind it?
It is the backplate trim, not the knob. The 0405 is the oval decorative plate carrying the emergency release, and it sits behind or around the knob on the outside face of the door. You still need the matching knob and latch to complete the opening.
2) What finishes is the Baldwin 0405 emergency release trim available in?
Fourteen finishes, which is what lets you match the rest of a Baldwin suite in the house: 003 Polished Brass, 031 Non-Lacquered Brass, 033 Vintage Brass, 044 Satin Brass, 050 Satin Brass and Black, 055 Polished Nickel, 056 Satin Nickel, 060 Satin Brass and Brown, 076 Graphite Nickel, 102 Oil Rubbed Bronze, 112 Venetian Bronze, 190 Satin Black, 260 Polished Chrome, and 402 Distressed Oil Rubbed Bronze.
3) Is the Baldwin 0405 oval trim meant for residential or commercial doors?
Residential. Baldwin classes the 0405 as residential door hardware, so it suits homes, condos and interior privacy doors rather than high traffic commercial openings governed by grade and fire rating requirements.
4) Does the emergency release key come with the Baldwin 0405 trim, or do I order it separately?
The release key is included. The 0405 ships with the 041 emergency release key and the 6701 cover, so you are not sourcing the unlocking tool separately. Property managers usually keep a spare on the master ring since these keys walk off.
5) How durable is Baldwin's 056 Satin Nickel finish on this trim?
The Satin Nickel version is nickel plated over solid brass with a PVD satin finish, so you get the weight of brass with a matte silver tone that holds up to handling. If you want a living finish that patinas instead, the 031 Non-Lacquered Brass is the one that will change over time.
6) Is there a drilling template for installing the Baldwin 0405 trim?
Yes. Baldwin publishes a technical drilling drawing for the 0405, linked from the product information, so you can lay out the bore and the release opening before you cut the door. Work from that drawing rather than eyeballing it off the existing plate.
