Baldwin 6703102 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) What is a Baldwin Estate 6703 emergency bit key used for?
The 6703 is the skeleton-style bit key that opens a Baldwin Estate mortise bolt or a privacy-function mortise lock from the outside when someone is locked in. It is the emergency release for those functions, not a keyed-entry key, so it does not operate a cylinder-keyed lock.
2) Will the Baldwin 6703 bit key work on a keyed entry mortise lock?
No. The 6703 bit key is made for mortise bolts and privacy-function mortise locks only. A keyed entry mortise lock operates off a cylinder and takes a cut cylinder key, so the bit key will not turn it.
3) I lost the emergency key for my Baldwin privacy mortise lock. Is the 6703 the replacement?
For Baldwin Estate mortise bolts and Estate privacy-function mortise locks, yes, the 6703 is the emergency bit key for that hardware. Order it in the finish that matches the rest of your Estate trim.
4) Is the Baldwin Estate 6703 emergency key rated for commercial door hardware?
It is a residential product, part of Baldwin's Estate Series. Property managers running apartments, single-family rentals, or hospitality guest rooms with Baldwin Estate privacy mortise hardware are the fit here. For a commercial opening on an institutional spec, you would be looking at a different class of lockset entirely.
5) What finishes does the Baldwin 6703 emergency bit key come in?
Three: 031 Non-Lacquered Brass, 055 Polished Nickel PVD, and 102 Oil Rubbed Bronze. If you are matching a set of Estate trim across a building, pick the code that matches the lock trim already installed. Non-lacquered brass will live-finish and darken over time; the PVD nickel holds its appearance.
6) Do I need one Baldwin 6703 bit key per door, or does one open them all?
A bit key of this type is not keyed to an individual lock the way a cylinder key is, so a single 6703 operates the Estate mortise bolts and privacy mortise locks it is built for. Most property managers keep one or two per building for staff and spares rather than one per opening.
