Baldwin BAL-R046.050.PV – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Will the Baldwin R046 Palm Spring rose cover a standard 2-1/8 inch bore hole?
No. The R046 Palm Spring rose will not cover the 2.125 inch standard door preparation. If your door is already bored 2-1/8 inches for a tubular lockset, the hole will show around the edge of the rose, so either the door needs to be prepped smaller for this trim or you need a larger-diameter rose.
2) What comes in the box with the Baldwin Estate R046 privacy rose, and what do I still have to buy?
You get either one or two roses depending on whether you order the pair or the half pair, plus the appropriate backplate and the retainer or retainers that hold the rose to the door. Knobs or levers, the latch, and any adaptors are separate items. So the R046 is trim only, not a complete privacy set.
3) Should I order the R046 rose as a pair or a half pair?
Order the Pair when you are dressing both faces of a privacy door, which is the normal case for a bath or bedroom. The Half Pair covers one face only, and is what you want for a replacement, a damaged rose, or a door where only one side gets trim. Both options exist in every finish offered.
4) Does the Baldwin R046 rose work with a passage or keyed latch, or only privacy?
The R046 Palm Spring rose here is the privacy version, used to build tubular privacy sets, so it is drilled for the turn button and emergency release that a bath or bedroom door needs. For a hall and closet or keyed entry opening you need the matching passage or keyed rose in the same Palm Spring pattern instead.
5) How far does the Baldwin Palm Spring R046 rose stand off the door face?
Projection is 0.25 inch. That shallow a footprint keeps the trim close to the face of the door, which matters if the door swings against a return wall or sits near a casing where a deeper rose would look crowded.
6) What finishes does the Baldwin Estate R046 Palm Spring privacy rose come in?
Fourteen finishes, each available as a pair or a half pair: 003 Polished Brass, 031 Non-Lacquered Brass, 033 Vintage Brass, 044 Satin Brass, 050 Satin Brass and Black, 055 Polished Nickel, 056 Satin Nickel, 060 Satin Brass and Brown, 076 Graphite Nickel, 102 Oil Rubbed Bronze, 112/11P Venetian Bronze, 190 Satin Black, 260 Polished Chrome, and 402 Distressed Oil Rubbed Bronze. Ordering by the Baldwin finish number is the reliable way to match trim already on other doors in the house.
7) I have one damaged rose on a bathroom door. Can I buy just that piece?
Yes, order the Half Pair in the finish that matches. It ships as a single rose with its backplate and retainer, so you can swap the damaged face without disturbing the other side or replacing the knob and latch. Match the Baldwin finish number to what is on the door, since the brass tones are close to each other.
8) Is the Baldwin R046 rose solid brass or plated steel?
Substrate is brass. On the Lifetime Satin Nickel finish, Baldwin nickel-plates that solid brass, giving a matte silver tone over the weight of a brass casting. The brass base is also why the plated and living-finish options such as 031 Non-Lacquered Brass behave the way they do over time.
9) Is the Palm Spring R046 rose suited to a commercial building or a house?
It is residential trim from Baldwin's Estate Series, and that is where it belongs: single family homes, high-end remodels, and the kind of multi-family unit where appearance drives the spec. For a commercial corridor or a high-traffic institutional opening you want a Grade 1 or Grade 2 commercial lockset with its own trim rather than a decorative brass rose.
