Installation & Operation

  1. Review manufacturer specifications and verify door preparation requirements including door thickness (standard 1-3/4" or up to 5" thick door configuration), mortise pocket dimensions, and handing requirements.
  2. Use manufacturer-provided templates to mark mounting hole locations accurately on door and frame surfaces for the 8" H x 1-1/4" W faceplate.
  3. Prepare door mortise pocket to accommodate the 5-7/8" H x 7/8" D x 4-1/16" W case dimensions and route for armored front installation.
  4. Install the lockbody into the mortise pocket and secure the armored front, allowing self-alignment with door bevel during installation.
  5. Configure the four position hub toggle design for desired operation and adjust the reversible latch orientation as needed for door handing.
  6. Test lockbody operation to verify proper latch and deadbolt function, smooth lever operation, and proper alignment. Refer to manufacturer documentation for complete installation details and troubleshooting.

BEST 45HCAN626 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) What backset and door thickness does the BEST 45HCA mortise lockbody fit?
The 45HCA lockbody is a 2-3/4 inch backset mortise case, and the standard configuration is built for 1-3/4 inch doors. If your door is thicker, BEST makes a thick door configuration for doors up to 5 inches, but you have to specify the thickness when you order it. There's no field adjustment for that, so measure the leaf before you place the order.
2) Will the BEST 45HCA mortise pocket and faceplate fit my existing door prep?
The case measures 5-7/8 x 7/8 x 4-1/16 inches (H x D x W) and the faceplate is 8 x 1-1/4 x 1/16 inches. That's the standard BEST 45H/47H mortise pocket, so if the door was previously prepped for a 45H or 47H series lock it drops in. Coming out of another manufacturer's mortise lock, check those case and face dimensions against your pocket and edge routing before you cut anything. The armored front self-aligns to the door bevel during install, so you don't need a beveled face ordered to hand.
3) Does the BEST 45HCA passage lockbody lock at all, or is it always free?
Passage function (the N function) means both levers are always free, there's no key and no locking from either side. The custom field lists it as non-keyed. It does carry a 1 inch throw stainless deadbolt operated by the inside turn, plus the 3/4 inch anti-friction latch, so you can secure the opening manually from inside, but nothing locks the door from the corridor. For a classroom, office, or storeroom that has to lock, you need a different function in the 45H family, not this one.
4) Do I have to order the BEST 45HCA to hand, or can I reverse it on the job?
Handing is a required selection on the order (RH, LH, RHRB, or LHRB), but the lock itself is field reversible. The latch rotates 180 degrees without opening the case, and the hub has a four position toggle, so a locksmith standing at the door can flip it if the opening turns out opposite to what was ordered. The auxiliary bolt is non-handed.
5) Does the BEST 45HCA mortise lockbody come with levers, trim, and a strike?
No. What you get is the lock case only. Levers or knobs, escutcheon or sectional trim, the strike, and the core are all separate line items. The case comes with an SFIC prep less core, so on the passage function there's no cylinder to fill anyway, but on a job where you're mixing functions plan on ordering trim and strikes alongside. There is a 7/8 inch lip to center strike option at the order form if that's the lip projection your frame needs.
6) Is the BEST 45H mortise lock ANSI Grade 1, and does it meet Grade 1 security?
The 45H Series is ANSI A156.13, Series 1000, Grade 1 for Operation and Strength, but Grade 2 for Security as standard. To reach Grade 1 Security you have to use a drill resistant core (1CD, 1CDP, 1CDF, or 1CDX) with escutcheon trim, or the 1EK7K4 high security cylinder with sectional trim. If your spec calls for Grade 1 security straight out of the box, the 47H Series carries Grade 1 for Operational, Strength, and Security. The 45H design also meets the intent of ANSI A117.1 section 404.2.6.
7) Will the BEST 45HCA latch into the strike that's already in my frame?
The latchbolt throws 3/4 inch and the deadbolt 1 inch, both stainless, off a 2-3/4 inch backset. That's the standard commercial mortise geometry, so an existing BEST 45H or 47H strike lines up. Replacing another brand's mortise lock, the thing to check is the strike lip: the frame lip has to reach far enough past the stop to catch a 3/4 inch throw without the latch riding the lip edge. If your existing strike came off a lock with a different backset or lip length, order the 7/8 inch lip to center strike option with the lock.
8) Should I use a mortise lockbody like the BEST 45HCA or a cylindrical lever for a passage door?
A mortise case goes into a pocket routed into the door edge and needs that prep; a cylindrical lock goes through a bored hole. For a hall, closet, or office door in a commercial building that already has mortise prep, or where the spec calls for Grade 1 A156.13 operation and strength, the 45HCA is the direct answer. On a door with a standard 2-1/8 inch cross bore and no mortise pocket, cutting a mortise pocket to use this is a lot of work for a passage function, and a cylindrical passage lever is the cheaper path. The deciding factor is the existing door prep, not the function.
9) Which BEST 45HCA finish should I order for a hospital or school corridor?
Two antimicrobial options exist: 626AM (satin chrome) and 630AM (satin stainless), both with the UltraShield coating that inhibits growth of bacteria and other microbes on the hardware surface. BEST recommends those anywhere cleanliness is a priority, which covers healthcare, elderly care, education, transportation, food service, and hospitality. If that isn't a driver, 626 satin chrome and 630 satin stainless are the standard institutional picks in the same look without the coating.
10) What finishes does the BEST 45HCA mortise lock come in to match the other doors in my building?
Fifteen finishes, so matching an existing fleet is usually possible: 605 bright brass, 606 satin brass, 611 bright bronze, 612 satin bronze, 613 oil rubbed satin bronze, 618 bright nickel, 619 satin nickel, 622 matte black, 625 bright chrome, 626 satin chrome, 626AM satin chrome antimicrobial, 629 bright stainless, 630 satin stainless, 630AM satin stainless antimicrobial, and 690 statuary dark bronze. Two behave differently over time on purpose: 613 is meant to wear to an antique look, and 690 stays a dark brown. If you need a dead match to hardware installed years ago, those two are the ones to look at in person.
11) How durable is the BEST 45HCA lock case for a high traffic entrance?
Case, cover, and armored front are all 0.095 inch cold rolled steel, zinc dichromate plated against corrosion, with four cover screws at the corners and an interlocking armored front and cover at the latch. The hub runs on roller bearings to cut wear, and the one-piece stainless anti-friction latch is oil impregnated and gives 50 percent more surface contact with the strike. It's rated heavy duty and commercial, which is the right class for a school or hospital corridor that cycles all day.
12) Can I get tamper resistant screws with the BEST 45HCA mortise lock?
Security head screws are a yes/no selection when you order the 45HCA. Worth taking on detention-adjacent openings, dorms, and any door where the public can reach the faceplate. It's an order-time choice, so pick it up front rather than sourcing screws separately later.
13) Is the BEST 45HCA an electrified mortise lock?
No, the 45HCA is purely mechanical. There's no solenoid, no monitoring, no wiring, so it can't be tied into an access control system or a fire alarm release. If your opening needs electric latch retraction or request-to-exit signaling, this is the wrong case and you need an electrified mortise lock instead.
