What is a panel board and how does it differ from a load center?
A panel board is a dead-front assembly of busbars and overcurrent devices listed to UL 67, designed for mounting inside a cabinet or cutout box and used to distribute power to branch circuits in a commercial building. NEC Article 408 governs their construction, working space, and overcurrent protection.
A load center is the lighter-duty residential and small-commercial cousin — same basic function, lower short-circuit ratings, limited to specific breaker types, and typically single-phase 120/240V. Eaton's CH and BR loadcenters sit here. Both are available through our panel boards & load centers category — pick based on service size, phase, and short-circuit requirement, not the label on the carton.
The practical dividing line: if the job calls out a bolt-on breaker, a 42-circuit interior, or anything above ~22kAIC series rating, you're specifying a panelboard. Plug-on breakers in a 100–225A single-phase cabinet usually means loadcenter.
What's the difference between main breaker, main lug, and sub panels?
Three configurations, three use cases:
- Main breaker panels have an integral service disconnect. Required when the panel is the service entrance or when NEC six-handle rule forces a single disconnecting means. Shop main breaker panels.
- Main lug panels (MLO) feed through terminal lugs with no main breaker — the upstream OCPD provides disconnect and protection. Common as downstream distribution. See main lug panels.
- Sub panels are MLO panels fed from a main — used to extend circuits to remote areas, isolate tenant loads, or add capacity. Neutral and ground must be isolated (bonded only at service).
Eaton's BRP16B20 is a typical 200A main breaker loadcenter for a small commercial service. The 3BR3L is the three-phase MLO equivalent downstream.
How do you size a commercial panel board?
Four variables drive the sizing decision: service amperage, phase/voltage, circuit count, and short-circuit interrupt rating (AIC).
Run the load calc per NEC Article 220 — connected load, demand factors, continuous loads at 125%. Add 25% headroom minimum for future growth; most commercial jobs end up at 200A, 400A, or 600A single-phase, or 208Y/120V and 480Y/277V three-phase for larger builds.
Circuit count: a 42-pole panel is the NEC Article 408 historical ceiling (removed in later cycles but still a practical limit for most manufacturers' cabinet sizes). A 200A panel typically ships in 20-, 30-, or 42-circuit configurations. The Eaton BRP16B20 is a 200A single-phase main breaker loadcenter; the 3BR3042BC is a three-phase 200A/42-circuit panel for 208Y/120V service.
AIC: calculate available fault current at the panel location. Standard loadcenters top out around 10kAIC; commercial panelboards run 22kAIC, 42kAIC, 65kAIC, 100kAIC depending on frame. The Eaton Series C FD molded-case breakers hit 35kAIC at 277V — spec these when fault current exceeds loadcenter ratings. Browse molded case circuit breakers for frame selection.

How do you choose the right circuit breakers for your panel?
Breaker selection is panel-specific. Use only breakers the panel is listed for, or a UL Classified replacement. Eaton CH-type panels take CH breakers, BR panels take BR breakers, Square D QO takes QO.
Standard thermal-magnetic branch breakers cover resistive and general lighting loads. For motor circuits, spec a Series C motor circuit protector like the GMCP015E0C (magnetic-only trip). Browse miniature circuit breakers for 10–125A branch devices.
Code-driven protection: dwelling units and specific commercial occupancies require AFCI breakers on 15/20A branch circuits per NEC 210.12. The Eaton BRP-GF plug-on neutral GFCI covers the equivalent 210.8 GFCI requirements. Verify your current code cycle — AFCI/GFCI scopes expand each edition.
Which NEMA rating do you need for a commercial panel enclosure?
- NEMA 1 — indoor, dry, general purpose. Default for electrical rooms, back-of-house, mechanical mezzanines.
- NEMA 3R — outdoor, rain- and sleet-tight. Required for service entrance panels mounted outside, pad-mount gear, exterior tenant disconnects. The Eaton CH NEMA 3R main lug loadcenter is a typical 3R MLO for exterior branch feeds. Shop NEMA 3R enclosures.
- NEMA 12 — indoor, dust-tight and drip-tight. Industrial plants, food processing, warehouses with airborne particulate.
- NEMA 4/4X — washdown, hose-directed water. 4X adds corrosion resistance (stainless) for coastal, chemical, or wastewater sites.
Match the rating to the actual installation condition, not the room's nominal use. A "mechanical room" with roof penetrations and condensate drip above the panel is NEMA 3R or 12 territory, not NEMA 1.
How does Eaton compare across its own commercial panel lines?
We carry Eaton deepest (CH, BR, Pow-R-Xpress, and Series C breakers) alongside Square D QO load centers like the one above. Siemens, ABB, and Hubbell will also show up on engineers' specs; where the submittal allows substitutions, match AIC rating, bus material, and enclosure, and confirm with the engineer of record before ordering.
Within the Eaton line, the trade-off is bus material, breaker type, and AIC headroom:
CH-Series is the premium commercial loadcenter — copper bus, plug-on neutral, tighter breaker tolerances, longer manufacturer warranty terms. Spec it where downtime cost is high or when the architect calls for copper. BR-Series is the value-tier equivalent with aluminum bus and plug-on BR breakers — appropriate for standard commercial, multi-family, and tenant panels where 10kAIC is adequate.
Series C molded-case breakers cover the gap above loadcenters: 22kAIC to 65kAIC, bolt-on, three-phase 480V capable, installed in Eaton panelboards. Pow-R-Xpress with 200% neutral handles harmonic-heavy loads — the 2NK panelboard doubles neutral ampacity for data centers, LED lighting, and VFD-fed branch panels where triplen harmonics would otherwise overload a standard 100% neutral.
Choose Eaton CH-Series when:
- Spec calls for copper bus and plug-on neutral
- Branch panel feeds critical loads (medical, lab, server room support)
- Project standardizes on CH breakers across the facility
- You need CHF switching-neutral breakers for isolated circuits
Choose Eaton BR-Series when:
- Standard commercial or multi-family service at 100–225A
- 10kAIC fault duty is adequate (verify short-circuit study)
- Budget-driven project with aluminum-bus acceptance
- You need three-phase panels in a loadcenter format (3BR series)
Choose Eaton Series C / Pow-R-Xpress when:
- Fault current exceeds 10kAIC — need 22kAIC or higher
- Three-phase 480Y/277V distribution or bolt-on breaker requirement
- Harmonic loads require 200% neutral (Pow-R-Xpress 2NK)
- Panel feeds motor loads needing MCP-style protection

How do you pair service entrance, metering, and disconnects?
A compliant commercial service is a stack: utility conductors → meter socket → main disconnect → panelboard. Each piece must match on amperage, phase, and jaw/bus configuration.
For single-phase 200A residential-style commercial service, pair an Eaton UBTH4203BCH meter socket (lever bypass, barrel lock — many utilities require both) with a main breaker loadcenter like the CHP24B20. Three-phase 208Y/120V commercial typically uses a 7-jaw socket or a 13-jaw instrument-rated socket like the USTL132A298CH for CT-metered services above 200A.
Multi-tenant commercial frequently uses modular meter stacks — the Eaton 35MM stack handles grouped 225A single-phase sockets at a 1200A bus. Shop meter sockets for utility-approved configurations and safety switches where a separate fused or non-fused disconnect is required ahead of the panel.
Verify utility specs before ordering. Jaw count, bypass style (lever vs. horn), ringless vs. ring-type cover, and hub location vary by POCO — the wrong socket costs you a reinspection.
Do commercial panel boards need surge protection?
For dwelling-unit services, yes: NEC 230.67 has required an SPD since the 2020 edition. For commercial services it's usually an engineer or owner call. Even where not code-required, a Type 1 or Type 2 SPD at the service entrance pays for itself the first time a utility transient hits the panel.
Two mounting approaches:
- Plug-on SPDs occupy a breaker slot. The Eaton CHNSURGE is an 18kA plug-on for CH loadcenters — no extra enclosure, no extra conduit run.
- Hard-wired SPDs mount beside the panel and land on a dedicated breaker. The SP1-208Y covers three-phase 120/208 Wye service and offers higher surge current capacity than plug-ons.
Browse panel mount SPDs for the right fit, and don't forget breaker box accessories — filler plates, bonding kits, hub plates, and ground bars that keep the install UL-compliant.
