Burndy BIBD43 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Can Burndy BIBD insulated tap connectors be used on copper as well as aluminum conductors?
Yes. The Burndy BIBD insulated multiple tap connectors take both aluminum and copper stranded conductors, so you can land a copper tap off an aluminum feeder in the same block. The body and hardware are aluminum, unplated.
2) What wire sizes do the Burndy BIBD tap connectors cover?
The range depends on which block you order. Small-conductor versions run #14 to 4 AWG (BIBD43, BIBD44) and #14 to 2/0 AWG (BIBD2/04). Mid-range blocks cover #10 AWG to 250 kcmil (BIBD2502, BIBD2503) and #10 AWG to 350 kcmil (BIBD3503). Feeder-size blocks cover 4 AWG to 600 kcmil (BIBD6004, BIBD600-5, BIBD600-6, BIBD600-10) and #2 AWG to 750 kcmil (BIBD7502, BIBD750-3). Pick the block whose range brackets both your largest feeder and your smallest tap.
3) How many ports do I need on a Burndy BIBD tap block for a feeder plus taps?
Count every conductor, feeder included. A 4-port block gives you one feeder plus three taps. Port counts run 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 and 10 depending on wire range: 2 and 3 port in the 250 kcmil, 350 kcmil and 750 kcmil ranges, and 4, 5, 6 and 10 port in the 4 AWG to 600 kcmil range. The 10-port BIBD600-10 is the one to use when you are feeding a bank of branch circuits off a single distribution tap.
4) Can I bury a Burndy BIBD insulated tap connector or use it in a handhole?
No. These plastisol insulated tap blocks are not rated for direct burial. Keep them in panels, junction boxes, gutters and enclosures. For a below-grade or submerged splice you need a connector specifically listed for direct burial or submersion.
5) Which Burndy BIBD block should I use for a 600 kcmil service feeder tap?
Use one of the 4 AWG to 600 kcmil blocks: BIBD6004 (4 port), BIBD600-5 (5 port), BIBD600-6 (6 port) or BIBD600-10 (10 port). If your feeder is 750 kcmil, step up to BIBD7502 or BIBD750-3, which run #2 AWG to 750 kcmil. All are 600V rated.
6) What voltage are Burndy BIBD tap connectors rated for?
600V. That covers standard 120/208V and 277/480V building distribution, panel feeds and control panel work. It does not cover medium-voltage applications.
7) Why choose a clear plastisol insulated tap block instead of a bare tap connector plus tape?
The plastisol cover is factory applied and clear, so you can see the conductor seated in the port and check the connection without cutting anything open. Taping a bare block is slower, is only as good as the wrap, and hides the termination. On the BIBD blocks the insulation is part of the UL Listed assembly rather than something added in the field.
8) Do conductors enter a Burndy BIBD tap block from one side or both?
Two-sided entry. Feeder can come in one face and taps leave the other, which keeps routing clean in a tight gutter or junction box instead of forcing every conductor into a single bend.
9) Does unplated aluminum hardware matter for a damp or industrial environment?
The hardware on the BIBD blocks is aluminum and unplated. Aluminum's own oxide layer gives it corrosion resistance, and it is the standard material for a dual-rated AL/CU tap block. What it is not rated for is direct burial, so anything wet-location or below grade needs a different connector.
