1) What sizes and lengths does the Carlon Carflex liquid-tight whip assembly come in?
The Carflex whip assembly comes in 1/2 inch and 3/4 inch conduit sizes, each in 4 foot and 6 foot lengths. The 1/2 inch whips carry either 12 AWG or 10 AWG wire, and the 3/4 inch whips carry 8 AWG. So if you are running a larger pool pump or condenser that needs 8 gauge conductors, you need the 3/4 inch version (WCE4 for 4 feet, WCE6 for 6 feet).
2) Can I use a Carlon Carflex whip on a swimming pool pump motor?
Yes. Pool motor installations are exactly what the Carflex moisture-tight non-metallic flexible conduit system is called out for. The liquid-tight jacket keeps water out of the connection at the motor, and because the conduit and fittings are non-metallic there is nothing to corrode in a chlorinated, constantly wet equipment pad.
3) Which Carflex whip do I need for an outdoor AC condenser disconnect?
Match the whip to the conductor size the unit calls for. Most residential condensers land on 10 AWG, which is the 1/2 inch whip (WCD4 at 4 feet, WCD6 at 6 feet). Larger units needing 8 AWG take the 3/4 inch whip, WCE4 or WCE6. Four feet is usually enough from a disconnect mounted beside the unit; six feet covers a disconnect set back on a wall or post.
4) Do I still need to buy separate liquid-tight connectors with the Carflex whip?
No. The Carflex whip ships as a complete assembly with the conduit, conductors and fittings already made up, so there is no separate connector or bushing to source. You cut in at the equipment and the disconnect and land the conductors.
5) What is the difference between the bulk pack and poly bag Carflex whips?
It is packaging quantity, not product. The 12 AWG 1/2 inch whips, WCD3124 (4 ft) and WCD3126 (6 ft), come 20 to a bulk pack. The 10 AWG 1/2 inch whips and both 3/4 inch 8 AWG whips come 6 to a poly bag. Contractors doing a multi-unit rooftop or a subdivision of pool pads usually want the bulk pack; a one-off service call does not.
6) Should I use a non-metallic whip or a metallic liquid-tight whip near salt water or a pool pad?
Go non-metallic in those spots. Metallic liquid-tight has a steel core under the jacket and corrodes where chlorine, pool chemistry or salt spray get at it, particularly at the fitting threads. The Carflex system is non-metallic end to end, which takes corrosion off the table in wash-down areas, dock and marine work, and pool equipment pads. Where you need the mechanical toughness of steel armor or a bonded metal path, metallic is the better choice.
7) Can a Carflex whip be used for landscape lighting and other wet location runs, or is it pool only?
It is not pool only. The same moisture-tight assembly is used for landscape lighting, outdoor equipment connections, general wet location electrical, industrial wash-down areas, HVAC equipment in damp locations, and marine or dock work. Any short flexible run where water is a factor and you want the connection sealed.
8) Why choose a flexible whip instead of running rigid conduit to the equipment?
Two reasons. Motors and compressors vibrate, and a flexible whip takes that movement instead of transmitting it into a rigid run and its threads. And it routes around obstructions on a crowded equipment pad or roof curb without bending or threading pipe on site. Rigid still makes sense for the long exposed run; the whip is for the last few feet into the machine.
