1) What is the difference between Carlon FN-CFB, FN-CFB-HB and FN-CFB-VR?
Three ways to mount the same draft-tight fan box. FN-CFB is the box on its own, for when you are fastening straight to a joist or to bracing you are supplying. FN-CFB-HB comes with a bar, the version you want when the fan lands between joists and you need to span them. FN-CFB-VR comes with an L bracket for fastening to the side of a single joist or to blocking. Pick by what is above the ceiling, not by the fan.
2) For a fan retrofit where I only have access from below, which Carlon fan box version do I order?
FN-CFB-HB, the version with the bar. A retrofit through an existing ceiling opening usually means no attic access and no chance to nail a box to a joist, and an expanding hanger bar goes in through the hole and braces between the joists. FN-CFB-VR with the L bracket needs you to reach a joist face, and the plain FN-CFB needs a surface to fasten to. Confirm you can reach a joist before choosing either of those.
3) Is 26 cubic inches enough box fill for a ceiling fan with a light kit?
26 cubic inches is the interior volume of the Carlon draft-tight fan box, which is generous for a ceiling outlet. Count your fill the usual way: each 14 AWG conductor is 2.00 cubic inches and each 12 AWG is 2.25, with an extra conductor allowance for the device or fixture studs and one for all grounds together. A fan with a separately switched light kit, meaning a feed, a switch leg, a neutral and grounds in 14 AWG, sits well inside 26 cubic inches.
4) Why does a ceiling fan box need to be draft-tight, and does this one help with an insulated attic ceiling?
A ceiling penetration into an unconditioned attic leaks conditioned air through the box and around the cable entries, which is why energy codes push sealed ceiling boxes on the top floor. The Carlon box is a draft-tight design that seals against airflow through the ceiling cavity. That is the reason to spec it on a top-floor bedroom or a vaulted ceiling rather than an ordinary fan box. On an interior floor with conditioned space above, the draft-tight feature buys you nothing.
5) The Carlon fan box has zero knockouts. How do I get cable into it?
Number of knockouts is 0 on this box by design. Non-metallic boxes are made this way so the installer opens only the entries actually used, which is what keeps the box draft-tight. You break or cut the entry you need at the time of rough-in and leave the rest closed. If your job requires factory knockouts with connectors landed on them, this is not the box for that.
6) Can I use a Carlon non-metallic fan box in a damp or corrosive area like a covered patio or a parking garage ceiling?
The non-metallic body resists corrosion, which is the reason electricians reach for it over a steel pan box in humid or chemically aggressive spaces. What the box does not carry on record is a damp or wet location listing, so treat corrosion resistance and location listing as separate questions and spec the box to the location listing your inspector will look for.
7) Is the Carlon draft-tight fan box made in the USA, and what brand label will show up on the carton?
