1) What sizes and cubic inch capacities does the Carlon vapor-tight nail-on box come in?
Five orderable configurations of the Carlon vapor-tight non-metallic box: 1-gang at 22.5 cu in (FN-23) and 1-gang at 22 cu in (FN-23R), 2-gang at 36 cu in in blue (FN-236-V) and black (FN-236-VR), and 3-gang at 54 cu in in black (FN-354-VR). Pick the cubic inch number against your conductor fill count, because that is what decides whether a device and its pigtails legally fit. The 3-gang at 54 cu in is the largest of the group.
2) Is the Carlon FN-23 an old work box or does it need to be nailed to a stud?
It's a new work box. The Carlon vapor-tight FN series mounts with angled side nails, so it has to go onto an exposed framing member before the drywall is up. If you're cutting into finished drywall with no stud access, this is the wrong part, you need an old work box with swing-out ears or wing clamps instead.
3) Why would I use a vapor-tight electrical box instead of a standard blue nail-on box?
Air sealing. A standard nail-on box is an open hole in the air barrier, conditioned air and moisture move through the cable knockouts and around the drywall flange. The Carlon FN series carries a foam gasket over the drywall flange plus additional gaskets over the cable entry points, so the box itself seals to the drywall rather than needing to be caulked or wrapped in a poly hat on site. That matters on exterior walls and ceiling penetrations under an attic, and on any envelope job where a blower door test is part of the close-out. On interior partition walls with no air barrier to maintain, a standard box does the same electrical job.
4) Can I use a Carlon vapor-tight non-metallic box outdoors or in a wet location?
Not exposed outdoors. This is a nail-on box gasketed for vapor and air sealing behind drywall, which is an interior envelope application, basements, crawl spaces, and covered installations. It is not a weatherproof in-use enclosure. For an exposed exterior wall or anywhere subject to direct rain, you want a listed weatherproof box with a bubble cover, not a drywall-flange nail-on box.
5) Is this Carlon box UL listed for code compliance on an inspected job?
Yes, the Carlon vapor-tight non-metallic box carries UL file E11461, which is the listing an inspector looks for on a non-metallic outlet box. It's made in the United States, which is the other thing that comes up on federally funded and institutional specs.
6) Do I need a metal box for grounding, or is non-metallic acceptable here?
Non-metallic is fine and is often the better call. A non-metallic enclosure isn't part of the equipment grounding path, so your ground lands on the device and pigtails together in the box rather than bonding to the enclosure. The upside over steel is corrosion, there's nothing to rust in a damp basement or crawl space and no galvanic reaction where dissimilar metals meet. Where you specifically need the box itself bonded, or you're pulling metal conduit into it, use a steel box instead.
7) Will the foam gasket on the Carlon FN series work with standard drywall thickness and regular device plates?
