1) How many wires can I put in a Carlon RN-23 outlet box?
The RN-23 is a 22.5 cubic inch single gang box, which is one of the larger nail-on nonmetallic boxes for a single device. Box fill is calculated under NEC Article 314.16, where a 14 AWG conductor counts 2.00 cubic inches and a 12 AWG conductor counts 2.25, with additional allowances deducted for the device, clamps, and grounds. At 22.5 cubic inches you have room for a typical switch or receptacle plus several cable runs without crowding the splices.
2) Can I use the Carlon RN-23 box with Romex (NM-B) cable?
Yes. The RN-23 nonmetallic box is designed and listed for use with non-metallic sheathed cable in accordance with Article 314. It is not intended for use with metal conduit systems, which need a metallic box with a proper bonding path.
3) How does the Carlon RN-23 box mount to studs?
It mounts with side nails, so you drive it directly into the face of the framing member during rough-in on new construction, before drywall. That makes it a stud-mount box only. For cutting into finished walls where there is no exposed framing, you need an old work or remodel box with wing clamps instead.
4) Is a PVC outlet box grounded, or do I still need a ground wire?
The RN-23 is nonmetallic PVC, so the box itself is not part of the grounding path and carries no bonding screw duty the way a steel box does. The equipment grounding conductor from your NM cable lands on the device's green ground screw. That is also why nonmetallic boxes are simpler on a wood-framed job: no box bonding jumper to make up.
5) Can I use the RN-23 outdoors or in a damp location?
No. The RN-23 is an interior nail-on device box for use with nonmetallic sheathed cable in framed walls and ceilings. Outdoor or wet-location work calls for a weatherproof box with threaded hubs and a gasketed in-use cover.
