CDVI A22K – Frequently Asked Questions

1) How many doors will the CDVI A22K controller run, and can it do read-in and read-out on both?
The A22K handles two doors. You can set it up as two doors read-in only, or two doors read-in and read-out if you want to track exits as well as entries. On a larger site the same platform scales up to 500 doors and 10,000 users across multiple controllers, so a two-door board is a starting point rather than a ceiling.
2) Will the A22K power my maglocks, or do I need a separate power supply for the locks?
Lock power is on board. The A22K gives you two 12V outputs rated 750mA each, enough for one maglock and one strike, or two maglocks or two strikes. Check the holding current on your locks against 750mA per door; anything heavier needs its own supply switched through the relay contacts. The two relays are Form C dry contacts, so they will switch an external supply for a fail-safe or fail-secure lock either way.
3) What cards and readers work with the CDVI Krypto A22K?
The A22K reads proximity, MIFARE, and DESFire EV1/EV2 credentials and readers, and it also accepts Mobile-PASS smartphone credentials. The point of the KRYPTO version is the encrypted end of that range: AES encryption runs end to end between credential, reader and controller, which is what stops a card being cloned at the door. If you are only running plain 125kHz prox you can still use the board, you just are not getting the security the K version exists for.
4) What is the difference between the CDVI A22K and the A22 Atrium 2-door kit?
Both are 2-door controllers with reader function. The A22K is the KRYPTO high security controller, with end-to-end military-grade AES encryption built in and compatibility with proximity, MIFARE, and DESFire EV1/EV2 readers and credentials, controlling up to 500 doors and 10,000 users on the system. The A22KITSTB is an Atrium 2-door kit built around the A22 controller and supplied with 2 STARPB readers and 15 credentials, so it arrives as a complete door package rather than a controller alone. Choose the A22K when the specification calls for encrypted credentials that cannot be cloned; choose the kit when you want the controller, readers, and starter credentials in one order.
5) I only have one door to control - is the A22K overkill?
The A22K is built for two doors, either 2 doors read in only or 2 doors read in and read out, with 2 Form C dry contact relays and 2 lock outputs at 12V, 750mA. For a single opening, the Schlage Electronics CTE ENGAGE single door controller with a mobile-enabled multi-technology reader and direct RS-485 connection covers one door in one device. The A22K still makes sense on a single door when you intend to expand, since the KRYPTO system scales to 500 doors and 10,000 users, or when you need the encrypted DESFire credential path.
6) Does the A22K need a battery for backup power, and is one supplied?
You supply the battery. The A22K takes one 12Vdc 7Ah rechargeable lead-acid or gel cell for standby, and it must go in with correct polarity. In Europe CDVI points to its own B7AH cell. Budget for that battery on the order or the doors drop out with the mains.
7) Do I have to buy access control software to run the CDVI A22K?
No software licence to buy. The A22K comes with CDVI's management software free, including free upgrades and a drag-and-drop Floorplan Manager, and CDVI provides installer training at no charge. Licences are only needed if you add the CCTV or ANPR interfaces. For an integrator quoting a small site, that removes the per-seat software line most competing platforms carry.
8) Can the A22K control an elevator or tie into an intruder alarm?
Elevator control, Texecom intruder alarm integration, and Aperio/Schlage wireless handle support are all built-in add-on modes on the A22K, no extra module needed. That covers the two jobs that usually force a bigger panel: floor-by-floor lift control, and arming or disarming the intruder system from a valid card read. CCTV and ANPR interfaces are available too, but those need an additional licence.
9) Two-door controller or a single-door controller at each opening: which should I use?
If the two doors are close enough to pull reader cable back to one point, the two-door A22K is the cheaper and simpler run, and it is one board and one battery to maintain. Where doors are scattered across a large building, a controller at each opening keeps the cable runs short. The Schlage Electronics CTE ENGAGE single door controller with a mobile-enabled multi-technology reader and a direct RS-485 connection is the one-door option to look at for that layout. The tradeoff is cabling distance against the number of enclosures you have to mount and power.
10) Can I wire fail-safe and fail-secure locks on the same A22K?
Yes. Each of the two doors has its own Form C relay, which is a dry changeover contact, so you take normally-open for a fail-secure strike and normally-closed for a fail-safe maglock independently on each door. That lets you put a fail-safe maglock on an egress door and a fail-secure strike on a storeroom off one board, with the 12V 750mA outputs feeding whichever of them the current rating supports.
11) Can I use the Schlage CTE ENGAGE controller instead of the CDVI A22K?
They are not drop-in equivalents. The CTE ENGAGE is a single door controller with a mobile-enabled multi-technology reader wired by direct RS-485 connection, so it serves one opening and lives on the ENGAGE side of the house. The A22K is a 2-door KRYPTO controller, surface mounted in a lockable metal case, taking 120 to 240Vac input with a 12Vdc 7Ah backup battery, and it runs on CDVI's free management software with Floorplan Manager. If your site is already on CDVI readers and credentials, the A22K keeps one head end; if you are standardizing on ENGAGE, the CTE is the matching part.
12) Which 2-door CDVI controller should I order if I want mobile credentials and card cloning protection?
The A22K is the one specified for that. It carries military-grade AES encryption as standard to eradicate the risk of card cloning, reads proximity, MIFARE, and DESFire EV1/EV2 credentials, and is compatible with Mobile-PASS smartphone credentials. The A22KITSTB kit is the Atrium package supplied with 2 STARPB readers and 15 credentials, which is the route to take when you want readers and credentials shipped with the controller for a straightforward two-door install.
13) Is the CDVI A22K suitable for a commercial building, or is it a residential product?
The A22K is classified as commercial equipment and CDVI positions it for both homes and businesses. Two doors on one board with a 10,000 user ceiling and multi-controller expansion to 500 doors makes it workable for a small commercial suite, a multi-family common-door package, or a phased rollout across a campus where you add boards as you go.
