1) What controller do I need to run the CDVI Krypto K4 reader?
The Krypto K4 is built to run on CDVI's A22K controller, and the end-to-end encryption between credential, reader and controller only works in that pairing. It connects over RS485 and takes 12VDC at 200 mA, so plan a power supply and a two-pair run back to the panel. If you are starting from nothing, CDVI's Atrium 2-door kit (A22KITSTB) is the A22-based starting point with readers and credentials included.
2) What credentials does the Krypto K4 read, and will it read my existing MiFare Classic cards?
It reads 13.56 MHz MiFare Classic and DESFire EV1/EV2 credentials, plus the KRYPTO Mobile-PASS and phones over Bluetooth and NFC. So existing MiFare Classic cards will read, but the encrypted end-to-end security is what you get with CDVI's EV2 credentials. Note it is a 13.56 MHz reader only, so 125 kHz prox fobs will not work on it.
3) Is the CDVI Krypto K4 OSDP compatible for a third-party access control panel?
It is OSDP-2 compatible and wires over RS485, with KRYPTO as the default security level and OSDP2 selectable. That means an integrator can bring it into an OSDP secure-channel head end rather than being locked to CDVI, though the Krypto encryption to the A22K controller is what you give up when you switch protocols.
4) Is the CDVI Krypto K4 reader a standalone door controller, or does it need something else to make the door work?
The Krypto K4 is a reader and keypad only. It connects over RS485 and works with the CDVI A22K controller and the ATRIUM BT app, so the access decisions and door relay live in the controller, not in the K4. If you want the controller and reader together in one package, the CDVI Americas A22KITSTB Atrium 2-door kit bundles an A22 controller with two readers and 15 credentials. 5) Can tenants unlock the door with their phones instead of carrying a card?
Yes. The K4 works with the ATRIUM BT mobile app and the KRYPTO Mobile-PASS, so a resident or staff member presents their smartphone over Bluetooth or NFC. For property managers running mixed populations, you can issue phone credentials to regular occupants and keep cards or a keypad code for contractors and vendors on the same reader.
6) How long a PIN can I program on the CDVI K4 keypad?
Codes run 4 to 8 digits on the touch sensitive keypad. Longer codes are worth using on multi-tenant or shared entries where codes get passed around; the keypad also lets you run card-plus-PIN at higher security openings since the same unit does both credential and code.
7) How close does the card have to be to the K4 reader to work?
Read range is up to 2 inches (5 cm). That is a present-and-hold reader, not a long-range one, so it is fine for pedestrian doors but not for gate or vehicle lanes where you want a driver to read from a car window.
