CDVI STARPB – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Will the CDVI STARPB prox reader fit on a narrow door mullion or aluminum frame?
Yes. The STARPB is a mullion-style reader measuring 5.5 x 1.65 x 1.4 inches (140mm x 42mm x 23mm), so it mounts on the narrow face of a storefront mullion or an aluminum door frame where a square wall reader will not sit flat. That 1.65 inch width is the number to check against your mullion face before ordering.
2) Will the CDVI STARPB reader work with the HID 125 kHz prox cards we already issue?
It reads 125 kHz credentials and handles CDVI, HID and most popular 26-bit Wiegand card encoding, so an existing 26-bit HID prox fleet will read on it. What it will not do is read 13.56 MHz smart credentials (iCLASS, MIFARE, DESFire) or mobile, because it is a 125 kHz-only reader. If your building has already moved to 13.56 MHz, this is the wrong reader.
3) Can the STARPB prox reader be mounted outside on an exterior door?
Yes, it is rated for indoor or outdoor use. The PCB is sealed in epoxy and the casing is polycarbonate, with an IP53 rating and an operating range of -22F to 158F (-30C to 70C). That temperature band covers most North American exterior installs. IP53 protects against dust and falling spray, so keep it off a surface that gets pressure washed or takes driving rain head-on.
4) What power supply and wiring does the CDVI STARPB reader need?
12 Vdc in, drawing 100 mA, with a Wiegand output to the controller. Size your access control power supply for 100 mA per reader, so a two-door opening with a reader on each side needs 200 mA of headroom on the 12 Vdc bus on top of whatever the locks pull.
5) Does the STARPB reader need a separate access control panel, or does it work on its own?
It is a reader only. The STARPB puts out Wiegand and needs a controller behind it to make the unlock decision and drive the lock. 7) Can a Schlage CTE ENGAGE single door controller be used in place of a CDVI STARPB prox reader?
They are not interchangeable parts. The STARPB is a reader only, sending 125 kHz proximity credential data out over Wiegand to a separate access control panel. The Schlage Electronics CTE ENGAGE Single Door Controller is a controller with an integrated mobile-enabled multi-technology reader that connects by direct RS-485. Swapping the CTE in for a STARPB replaces both the reader and the door's control decision point, and the RS-485 connection does not land on a Wiegand reader input. Choose the STARPB when an existing panel expects a Wiegand reader; choose the CTE ENGAGE when the opening needs its own single-door controller and mobile credential support.
8) How close does a card have to be held to the STARPB reader?
Read range is up to 2.4 inches (6 cm). That is a present-the-card reader, not a hands-free or drive-up one. For a tenant walking up with a badge in hand it is fine; for a loading dock or gate where someone stays in a vehicle, 2.4 inches will not reach and you want a long-range reader instead.
9) Is the CDVI STARPB reader UL listed for access control?
It is ETL listed to UL294, the access control system units standard, and also carries RoHS, WEEE, IP53, CE, FCC and R&TTE. UL294 is usually what a spec or an AHJ asks for on egress and access control equipment, so this clears that line item.
10) Should I use a mullion prox reader or an all-in-one door controller with a built-in reader?
It depends on where the intelligence lives.
