1) Will the Schlage L9492EL fit a 1-3/8 inch door?
No. The L9492EL electrified mortise lock is built for 1-3/4 inch doors only. Thinner doors need a different lock, or a factory door-thickness option specified at order. The mortise pocket has to take a case measuring 4-7/16 x 6-1/16 x 1 inches, so the door has to have the depth for it.
2) What happens to a Schlage L9492EL when the power goes out?
It unlocks. The L9492EL is the EL (fail safe) version, so the outside levers are held locked while 12 or 24VDC is applied and go free the moment power drops. If you need the opening to stay secure on a power failure, you want the fail secure EU configuration instead, where the outside lever is unlocked while energized. The electrified L Series locks auto detect 12V/24V DC and EL/EU is customer selectable. Either way the inside lever is always free for immediate egress, and it retracts both the deadbolt and the latchbolt in one motion.
3) Do I need a separate electric strike or maglock if I use an L9492EL?
No. The L9492EL puts the access control in the lock body itself, so the frame takes an ordinary 10-072 box strike, 1-1/4 x 4-7/8 inches, square corner, with a 1-3/16 inch lip. That is the whole point of an electrified mortise lock over a strike or a mag: no cutting the frame for a strike body, no wiring at the jamb, and the deadbolt still throws by key or thumbturn independently of the electronics. Wiring runs through the door via a transfer hinge or door loop to the lock.
4) Is the Schlage L9492EL fire rated, and can I use it on a 3 hour door?
The L9000 mortise locks are UL listed for 3-hour fire doors, and UL/cUL listed for A label single doors up to 4' x 10' and pairs up to 8' x 10'. The letter F and the UL symbol stamped on the latch front are how you verify the listing on the part in hand. One caveat that matters on a deadbolt function: the deadbolt is thrown by key or thumbturn, so on a fire door your AHJ will care that it can be retracted from the egress side, and the inside lever retracts deadbolt and latchbolt together. The L9000 series is tested and certified under ANSI/BHMA A156.13 Grade 1 for both security and operational, and the electrified functions are UL19X listed for single-point locking.
5) Does the L9492EL need to be ordered handed, or can I flip it in the field?
Field reversible, so one lock covers either hand of door. The exception is the trim: if you specify the 12 lever, you have to call out right hand or left hand at order, because that lever design is not symmetrical. The other seven lever designs (01, 02, 03, 05, 06, 07 and 17) do not need handing specified.
6) What do I have to specify when ordering a Schlage L9492EL?
Five things decide the part number. Cylinder: P for a conventional cylinder supplied, or L for less cylinder if you are supplying your own or using an interchangeable core. Keying: keyed different, keyed alike across a group of locks, or none if you took the less-cylinder route. Lever design: 01, 02, 03, 05, 06, 07, 12 or 17, with right or left hand called out on the 12. Rose or escutcheon: A or B wrought rose, N escutcheon, or L full face escutcheon. Finish: 605 bright brass, 606 satin brass, 609 antique brass, 612 satin bronze, 622 matte black, 625 bright chrome, 626 satin chrome, 630 satin stainless, or 643E aged bronze. If the lock is going into an existing master key system, note the keyway and bitting requirements on the order rather than taking the standard S123.
7) Can the L9492EL be keyed into my existing Schlage master key system?
It ships standard with a conventional 6-pin cylinder in the S123 keyway, which is the stock keyway and will not match a proprietary or restricted system. Two ways around that: order it keyed alike if you want a group of these locks on one key, or order the L cylinder option (less conventional cylinder) and drop in the cylinder from your own system, including an interchangeable core. Note that with interchangeable core cylinders the assembly is rated Grade 2 security rather than Grade 1; a concealed shell cylinder keeps A156.13 Grade 1 operational and security. A UL437 listed cylinder is available if you specify a Primus 20-500 Series.
8) Will the L9492EL latch into the strike that is already in my frame?
It depends on what is cut into the jamb. The lock uses a 3/4 inch throw stainless latch with an anti-friction tongue, matched to a 10-072 box strike, 1-1/4 x 4-7/8 inches with a square corner and a 1-3/16 inch lip. If your existing frame is prepped for a standard 4-7/8 inch ANSI strike with square corners, the supplied strike drops straight in. Radius corner frames or the older 1-1/8 x 2-3/4 inch strike prep will need the jamb reworked or a different strike. Remember this is a deadbolt function too, so the frame also needs the deadbolt pocket above the latch cutout, which a plain latch-only prep will not have.
