1) What happens to the L9494EL when the power goes out?
It unlocks. The L9494EL is the fail safe configuration: the outside levers are held locked by 12 or 24V DC (EL), so drop the power and the outside levers go free. If you need the opening to stay secure on a power loss, you want the fail secure EU version, where the outside lever is held unlocked by power and locks when power drops. Either way the inside lever is always free for immediate egress, and the deadbolt is not affected by the electronics at all, it is thrown and retracted by key.
2) Do I need to order the Schlage L9494EL handed?
No. The L9494EL is field reversible, so one lock covers left hand and right hand openings and you can set it on site. The one place handing does come into it is the 12 lever design, which is ordered specifically as left hand or right hand. All the other lever designs (01, 02, 03, 05, 06, 07, 17 and the Omega) are not handed.
3) What power supply do I need to run a Schlage L9494EL?
The lock auto detects 12 or 24V DC and draws 400mA, so size the supply and the number of openings on it around that figure. No jumper or field setting is needed to pick the voltage, and EL versus EU is customer selectable on the electrified L Series. You will also need a power transfer at the hinge or frame to get the wire into the door, which is a separate item from the lock.

If your existing frame has a standard 1-1/4 x 4-7/8 square corner ANSI prep you are lining up with the same footprint, but this is a deadbolt function, so the frame also has to be cut for the bolt, not just the latch. An old latch only prep will need the frame modified or the strike replaced.
6) Can I key the L9494EL into my existing Schlage master key system?
It comes standard with conventional 6-pin cylinders in the S123 keyway, ordered keyed different or keyed alike across multiple locks. If your building runs a different keyway or a restricted system, order it less cylinder and fit your own, which is also the route if you are running interchangeable cores. Two notes on that: with interchangeable core cylinders the assembly drops to Grade 2 security, and a UL437 listed cylinder is available by specifying the Primus 20-500 Series. Being a double cylinder function, remember you are supplying two cylinders per lock, not one.
