1) What happens to the L9495EL when the power drops?
Both levers unlock. The EL configuration is fail safe: the levers are held locked while 12 or 24VDC is applied, so cutting power releases them and the door can be opened from either side. That is the right choice for an egress path or a stair door on a fire alarm release, and the wrong choice for a storeroom or a drug room where you want the door to stay secure in an outage. If you need fail secure, order the EU version instead, where power unlocks rather than locks.
2) Can someone get out through a Schlage L9495EL when the deadbolt is thrown?
Yes, from either side while the lock is unlocked. Turning either lever retracts the deadbolt and the latchbolt together and opens the door in one motion. The deadbolt itself is thrown or retracted by key from outside or inside, since this is a double cylinder function. Worth knowing on an egress opening: a double cylinder lock needs a key on the inside to throw the bolt, which some AHJs restrict on required exits.
3) How much current does the L9495EL draw, and what power supply do I need?
Budget 400mA per lock. The lock auto-detects 12 or 24VDC, so a single supply at either voltage works and you do not have to order a voltage-specific part. Multiply 400mA by the number of openings on the circuit when you size the supply and the wire run, and remember an EL lock is energized continuously in the locked state, so that draw is constant, not momentary.
4) Do I have to specify handing when ordering a Schlage L9495 mortise lock?
The lock body is field reversible, so one part covers left and right hand openings and you can flip it on site. One exception on the trim side: the 12 lever is ordered as a specific hand, left or right. Every other lever design listed (01, 02, 03, 05, 06, 07, 17 and the Omega) is not handed.
5) Will the L9495EL latch into the strike that is already in my frame?
It ships with a 10-072 strike, 1-1/4 by 4-7/8 inches with square corners and a 1-3/16 inch lip, plus a box. The latch is a 3/4 inch stainless steel throw with an anti-friction tongue. If your existing frame already has an ANSI 4-7/8 inch square corner mortise strike cutout, the supplied strike drops in. A radius-corner frame or a T-strike prep will need the frame filed or a different strike, and a deadbolt-bearing mortise lock also needs the strike box deep enough to take the bolt.
6) Can I key a Schlage L9495EL into my existing master key system?
It comes standard with a conventional 6-pin cylinder in the S123 keyway, double cylinder (one each side). You can order it keyed different or keyed alike across multiple locks, and there is a free-text field for a specific keyway, master keying, or bitting requirement so it can be cut into an existing system. If your building runs interchangeable core or a restricted keyway, order it less cylinder and fit your own cores. Note that with interchangeable core cylinders the lock is rated Grade 2 security rather than Grade 1.
7) Is the Schlage L9000 mortise lock approved for a 3 hour fire door?
Yes. The L9000 series is UL listed for 3 hour fire doors (the L9076 and L9077 are the exceptions), and UL/cUL listed for A label single doors up to 4 by 10 feet and pairs up to 8 by 10 feet.
