For a small office or a multi-family common door with a few hundred tenants, that capacity is plenty; if you need two doors off one controller, look at the Aiphone AC-2DM-B PoE two-door access controller instead.
2) Can the A3 RFID controller be mounted outside on an exterior door?
Yes. The A3 is rated for internal and external use and conforms to IP66, so driven rain and dust washdown won't get into it. It also has an anti-tamper sensor, which matters on an exposed outside face where the reader is reachable from the street.
3) Will my existing MIFARE fobs and cards work with the A3 controller?
The A3 reads MIFARE Classic 13.56MHz 14443-3 Type A, MIFARE DESFire 13.56MHz ISO/IEC 14443 A 1-4, and MIFARE Ultralite 13.56MHz ISO/IEC 14443 A 1-3. If your building already runs credentials in any of those three families at 13.56MHz, they'll present to this reader. Older 125kHz prox cards will not, since the A3 is a 13.56MHz device only.
4) What is the difference between the Codelocks A3 RFID door controller and the Aiphone AC-2DM-B access controller?
The Codelocks A3 RFID standalone door controller (model AL03 RM BK) controls a single opening and runs without software, external programmers or licensing, storing up to 1000 MIFARE card clients on the reader itself. The Aiphone AC-2DM-B is a PoE two-door access controller, so it governs two doors from one unit and draws its power over the network cable. Choose the A3 when one door needs proximity access and you want no network infrastructure; choose the AC-2DM-B when two doors are being controlled and PoE cabling is already in place.
5) I need an access control unit for an exterior door exposed to weather - is the Codelocks A3 the right choice over the Aiphone AC Series controller?
The Codelocks A3 RFID door controller is rated for internal and external use and conforms to IP66, with a mixed plastic and alloy body and an anti-tamper sensor, so it is built to sit on the outside face of an opening. The Aiphone AC-2DM-B is a PoE two-door controller in the AC Series and functions as the control unit for two doors rather than the weather-facing reader at the opening. For a single exposed exterior door with no network run, the A3 is the direct fit.
6) Does the A3 RFID controller support keypad codes as well as cards?
Card only. The A3 RFID is a proximity-credential controller, so every user is enrolled as a card client, up to 1000 of them. If you want residents entering a PIN, this isn't the model to specify.
7) Standalone reader or a networked access control panel, which should I use?
The A3 RFID is standalone: all 1000 credentials live on the unit and you program it at the door, with no head-end software or licensing. That's the right call for one or two independent doors where nobody wants to maintain a server. 9) How do I know if a card was rejected at the A3 reader?
The A3 has LED status indicators on the face that show accept and reject states, plus a configurable penalty time that holds the reader off after repeated bad reads. That's the feedback loop at the door itself, since there's no monitoring software behind a standalone unit.
10) What finish does the Codelocks A3 RFID controller come in?
