Color-Keyed 54864BEPH – Frequently Asked Questions

1) What cable sizes does the Color Keyed two-hole long barrel copper compression lug come in?
Two conductor sizes are offered: 3/0 AWG (part 54864BEPH) and 600 kcmil (part 54878BEPH). Both are the two-hole long barrel copper design with a 1/2 in stud size, so the mounting pattern hardware stays the same between them while the barrel is sized to the conductor. Pick the barrel to match the actual conductor you are terminating, not the ampacity you want.
2) Will this lug bolt to a 1/2 inch bus bar stud?
Yes. The lug pad is drilled for 1/2 in studs, so it lands on 1/2 inch bolt or stud hardware on a bus bar, breaker pad, or ground bar. It is a two-hole pad, so you need two 1/2 inch landing points at the pad's hole spacing, not a single stud.
3) Can this copper compression lug be used on medium voltage cable terminations up to 35 kV?
It carries a 35 kV voltage rating, so it is suited to medium voltage cable terminations in that class as well as ordinary 600 V panel and switchgear work. The lug itself has no insulation on it, so the voltage rating relies on your termination kit, tape, or heat shrink for the insulating and stress control.
4) Can I use this copper lug on aluminum conductor?
No. It is a copper-bodied compression lug and should be installed on copper conductor. Aluminum conductor needs a lug rated AL or AL9CU for that service; putting aluminum in a copper-only barrel sets up a dissimilar metal joint that corrodes and runs hot.
5) Can I install this lug with a bolt-on setscrew wrench, or do I need a crimper?
It is a compression lug, not a mechanical setscrew lug, so it has to be crimped with a compression tool and the correct color-keyed die. There is no setscrew to torque. If you do not have a hydraulic or battery crimper on site, a mechanical setscrew lug in the same conductor size is the alternative.
6) Why use a two-hole lug instead of a one-hole lug?
Two bolts keep the pad from rotating under fault current or cable pull, which is why two-hole terminations are specified on bus work, switchgear, and grounding connections. A single-hole lug can spin on its stud and loosen the joint. If your equipment pad only has one tapped hole, a two-hole lug like this one will not land, and you need the single-hole version instead.
7) Is this lug insulated or do I need to insulate the barrel myself?
Bare copper, no insulation supplied. The barrel and pad come uninsulated, so on anything above a shielded enclosure you provide the insulating cover, tape, or heat shrink sleeve over the barrel and the exposed conductor.
8) What does Color Keyed mean on a Blackburn compression lug?
Color Keyed is the Blackburn compression system where the connector carries a color marking that tells the installer which die and die index to crimp with. Match the color on the lug to the matching color die in your hydraulic or battery compression tool and crimp the number of times the connector calls for. You need the correct color-keyed die set; the lug does not include one.
9) Is this lug suitable for grounding and bonding connections in a commercial panel?
Copper construction and a two-hole 1/2 in stud pad make it a workable fit for landing a copper grounding electrode conductor or bonding jumper on a ground bar that has 1/2 inch two-hole drilling. Size matters: the lug is offered for 3/0 AWG and 600 kcmil conductor only, so smaller grounding conductors need a smaller connector.
10) What is the advantage of a long barrel lug over a standard barrel?
The longer barrel takes more crimps along its length, which increases the contact area with the conductor and the mechanical pull-out strength of the joint. That is why long barrel lugs are commonly specified on larger conductors and on utility and medium voltage work. The tradeoff is depth: you need more straight cable and more room behind the pad inside the enclosure than a short barrel needs.
