B-LINE 13101ASQD25 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Can the B-Line Comet 13101ASQD25 photoelectric sensor run on 120V AC, or does it need a DC supply?
Either. The Comet 13101ASQD25 is a 2-wire AC/DC sensor accepting 90-132 Vac or 18-50 Vdc, so it drops straight onto a 120V line or onto 24V DC control power. Output is rated 300 mA at those same voltages, which is load current for a relay, contactor coil or PLC input, not for driving a motor directly.
2) Will this Comet sensor survive washdown in a food plant?
Yes. The Comet tubular sensor carries NEMA 1, 3, 4, 4X, 6, 6P, 12 and 13 plus IP68 and IP69K, and IP69K is the high-pressure, high-temperature washdown rating food processing lines are specified to. The lens is polycarbonate, the body is structural polyurethane foam and the cable jacket is PVC, so there is no painted metal housing to corrode.
3) Is the Comet 13101ASQD25 hard-wired or does it take a plug-in cable?
It is a pigtail-to-connector arrangement: a 10 inch PVC cord terminating in a 3-pin mini connector. You will need a mating 3-pin mini cordset of whatever length your run requires, since 10 inches will not reach a panel on its own.
4) What does background suppression mean on this sensor, and when should I use it instead of a diffuse sensor?
Background suppression means the sensor sees targets out to its sensing range and deliberately ignores anything past the cutoff range, so a wall, a conveyor bed or a shiny machine frame sitting just behind the product will not trigger it. Standard diffuse sensors judge on returned light intensity alone, so a dark box up close and a bright wall further out can look the same. Use background suppression when the target varies in colour or gloss, or when you cannot get the background out of the beam path. The published detection figures are based on a 90 percent reflectance card at the sensing range, ignored at the cutoff range.
5) Can this photoelectric sensor be used in a freezer or outdoors in winter?
Operating temperature runs -13 to 158 degrees F (-25 to 70 degrees C), which covers most cold storage and outdoor installs, and the IP68 and NEMA 6P ratings cover the wet and submersion side. Below -13 F it is out of spec.
6) What happens if the output gets shorted in the field?
The output is short circuit protected with automatic reset, so a pinched cordset or a shorted load shuts the output down and it comes back on its own once the fault is cleared. Keep the load inside the 300 mA maximum to stay out of trouble in the first place.
7) How do I tell whether the Comet sensor is actually seeing the target during setup?
There is a red LED for output status on the sensor itself, so during alignment you watch it switch as the target enters and leaves the beam. No meter needed to rough in the aim.
8) What is the exact part number and manufacturer for this Comet tubular sensor?
B-Line Comet Series, model 13101ASQD25, sold as a single model with no finish or length options. That is the number to quote when you are matching an existing installed sensor.
