B-LINE 14151AL14 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Does the Eaton B-Line Prism 14151AL14 photoelectric sensor come with a reflector?
No. The 14151AL14 is a polarized retroreflective sensor, which means it needs a retroreflector target mounted opposite it to complete the beam. The retroreflector is sold separately, so order the sensor and a retroreflector together if you are building the system from scratch.
2) Can this photoelectric sensor be used in a washdown or wet area?
Yes. The 14151AL14 carries NEMA 1, 3, 4, 4X, 6, 6P, 12 and 13 environmental ratings, which covers hosedown, corrosion-resistant and temporary submersion duty. The lens is polycarbonate, the body is structural polyurethane foam and the cable jacket is PVC, so there is no painted metal housing to corrode.
3) Will the Prism tubular sensor hold up in an unheated warehouse or cold dock?
Its operating range is -13 to 131 degrees F (-25 to 55 degrees C), so an unheated dock or warehouse in most climates is within range. Freezer applications below -13F are outside the rating.
4) Is this sensor a plug connector version or does it have a pigtail?
It is a cabled unit, not a quick-disconnect. The 14151AL14 ships with a 6.6 ft (2 m) PVC jacketed cable attached, so plan on a junction box or field wiring point within that distance of the mounting location.
5) Why use a polarized retroreflective sensor instead of a diffuse or through-beam type?
Polarized retroreflective, like the Prism 14151AL14 uses, puts the emitter and receiver in one housing and bounces the beam off a reflector, so you only wire one device instead of the two a through-beam pair needs. The polarizing filter means the sensor ignores light bounced back from shiny targets such as stretch wrap, cans or polished metal, which is where a plain diffuse sensor false-triggers. Through-beam is still the choice for the longest ranges and the toughest dusty environments.
6) How do I tell if the Prism sensor output is actually switching during setup?
There is a red LED on the unit that shows output status, so you can sight the reflector and watch the indicator change state rather than metering the wires. Handy when aligning the beam to the retroreflector on a one-person startup.
7) Is the output protected if I wire it into a low voltage load?
For loads under 32V AC or DC the solid state output is current limited, which guards against a short on the load side. The relay itself is isolated, so the output circuit is separated from the sensor supply.
