OATEY A9704B – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Will the Oatey Dearborn A9704B P-trap connect to a 1-1/2 inch sink drain?
Yes. The A9704B is a 1-1/2 inch P-trap, so it mates with standard 1-1/2 inch tubular sink drain tailpieces and a 1-1/2 inch wall outlet. It's built for a wall-connected sink drain system, not a floor-outlet (S-trap) rough-in. If your drain stub comes up out of the floor rather than out of the wall, this is the wrong trap configuration.
2) Does the Oatey A9704B P-trap come with the adapter to connect to ABS drain pipe?
It ships with a threaded ABS adapter and a marvel connector, so the trap arm side is ready to land on the wall drain without buying a separate transition fitting. The nuts and washers you need for the slip joints are part of the assembly too. It comes bagged as a complete kit.
3) Is the Oatey Dearborn A9704B a glue-up trap or does it take apart for cleaning?
Take apart. The A9704B uses ground joint connections with slip nuts, so you can break the trap, clear a clog or retrieve a dropped ring, and reassemble without cutting or solvent welding anything. The super nuts have full sized wings and longer threads, which means they hand-tighten without a wrench in most sink cabinets.
4) Should I use a polypropylene P-trap or a chrome brass one under a sink?
Polypropylene, which is what the A9704B is made of, is the standard choice anywhere the trap is hidden in a cabinet or a vanity: it will not corrode, it shrugs off drain chemicals, and it costs less than tubular brass. Go to chrome-plated brass only when the trap is exposed to view, as on a wall-hung or pedestal lavatory, or where a specification calls for a metal trap. For a concealed kitchen or bath sink in an apartment or commercial restroom, the plastic trap is the normal spec.
5) How well does the Oatey A9704B trap seal, and will the washers dry out?
The slip joints seal on TPE washers rather than the older rubber or poly cone washers. TPE holds its elasticity longer, which is the failure point on cheap traps: the washer takes a set, the joint weeps, and you get a cabinet floor stain months after the install. For a property manager turning units, that is the difference between one trip and two.
6) Which Oatey part number do I order for a 1-1/2 inch black P-trap with ABS adapter?
Order manufacturer part number A9704B from Oatey's Dearborn line. That single number covers the complete bagged assembly: the 1-1/2 inch black polypropylene P-trap, the threaded ABS adapter, and the marvel connector. There are no size or finish options to specify with it.
7) What color is the Oatey Dearborn A9704B P-trap, and does the color matter?
Black. Dearborn builds this trap in black polypropylene; the same trap family is offered in white as well. Under a cabinet the color is cosmetic, so if you are standardizing a building on one look, pick the color that matches the traps already installed and order it consistently. On an exposed lavatory, the black is what shows.
8) How much does the Oatey A9704B P-trap weigh for shipping a pallet of them?
Each bagged A9704B assembly runs 0.374 lb with a volume of 0.063, so a case quantity for a multi-family turn package or an MRO stockroom adds up to very little freight weight. Plastic tubular traps are light enough that carton count, not weight, drives the shipment.
