Design Hardware D1-S-BP-26D – Frequently Asked Questions

1) What is a cylinder x blank plate deadbolt and when should I use one instead of a thumbturn?
Cylinder outside, flat blank plate inside, no thumbturn at all. Nobody can throw or retract the bolt from the room side, so it's used where you don't want occupants securing themselves in, or where the inside face has to stay clean: storage rooms, mechanical spaces, stairwell doors, utility closets in multi-family. If you need the room side to operate the bolt without a key, order a cylinder x thumbturn instead, such as the Accentra D111 or Falcon D111, both Grade 1.
2) Can I put the Design Hardware D1 deadbolt on a 3-hour fire rated door?
Yes. The D1 Series is UL Listed for A Label 3 hour fire doors, and it meets and exceeds ANSI A156.2 at Grade 1. That combination is what an institutional spec usually calls for on a rated stair or corridor door.
3) Will the D1 deadbolt drop into my existing door prep, and will it hit my current strike?
It uses standard ANSI A115.2 prep: a 2-1/8 inch crossbore on a 2-3/4 inch backset, so it drops into a commercial door already bored for a deadbolt at that backset. The bolt throws a full 1 inch into a 1-1/8 x 2-3/4 inch square corner strike. If the frame currently has a radius corner strike or a shorter deadbolt pocket, plan on swapping the strike or deepening the pocket. On a 2-3/8 inch backset prep it will not line up, and the Accentra D111 is the 2-3/8 inch option.
4) Should I order the conventional cylinder or the SFIC version of the D1 deadbolt?
Conventional ships as a 6 pin brass cylinder in Schlage C keyway with two keys, ready to hang. The SFIC version comes prepped for a small format interchangeable core but ships less core, so you supply cores from your own system. Facilities already running an SFIC masterkey system take the SFIC prep; a one-off replacement on a building with no core program takes the conventional. Both are offered in all six finishes.
5) Can I key these deadbolts alike so one key runs several doors?
Yes, keying is a required choice at order: KD keyed different is standard, KA keyed alike groups multiple locks to one key. The conventional cylinder is Schlage C keyway, so it will pin into an existing C keyway system. A property manager doing a block of storage or utility doors normally takes KA.
6) I need a keyed deadbolt on a door where the inside must lock without a key. Is this the right one?
No, and the difference matters on the job. With the blank plate inside, the D1 can only be thrown and retracted with a key from the outside face. For inside operation without a key, look at a cylinder x thumbturn Grade 1 such as the Delaney LM Series (also available less core for SFIC) or the Deltana CL200LM. For a non-keyed inside-only deadlock, the Arrow E60 is blank plate x thumbturn, the mirror image of this one.
7) My door is 2 inches thick - the Design Hardware D1 will not fit, so what deadbolt will?
The Design Hardware D1 is built for 1-3/4 inch doors. For a thicker leaf, the Corbin Russwin DL3011 is a Grade 1 cylindrical deadlock in cylinder x blank listed for 1-3/4 inch through 2-1/4 inch doors, which is the closest match in function. If a thumbturn inside is acceptable, the Deltana 7312KA2 is a Grade 3 double cylinder deadbolt covering 1-3/8 inch to 2 inch doors.
8) I need a Grade 1 deadbolt with a thumbturn on the inside, not a blank plate - what should I order instead?
The Design Hardware D1 is built as Cylinder x Blank Plate, so the inside face does not throw the bolt. For a keyed-outside, turn-inside Grade 1 deadbolt, the Falcon D111 is a Grade 1 heavy duty cylinder x thumbturn deadbolt with an adjustable backset, the Accentra D111 is a Grade 1 cylinder x thumbturn deadbolt with a 2-3/8 inch backset and covers 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch doors, and the Dexter DB1000-SCT is a Grade 1 single cylinder deadbolt with a thumbturn for 1-3/8 inch to 1-7/8 inch doors.
9) I keyed a building on Schlage C - which other deadbolts take the same keyway as the Design Hardware D1?
The Design Hardware D1 uses a conventional Schlage C keyway cylinder. Among commercial deadbolts on the same keyway, the Hager 3115 is a Grade 2 cylinder x thumbturn deadbolt with a Schlage C keyway, the Hager 3118 is a Grade 1 classroom deadbolt with a Schlage C keyway and a 6-pin cylinder, and the Hager 3214 is a Grade 2 double cylinder deadbolt on Schlage C. All three cover 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch doors. The Dormakaba D900 small case mortise deadbolt is a cylinder x thumbturn offered keyed different with SC keyways.
10) Which other deadbolts are prepped for a small format interchangeable core like the SFIC version of the Design Hardware D1?
The Design Hardware D1 is offered in an SFIC Cylinder (no core) build alongside the conventional cylinder. Other deadbolts sold prepped less core include the Arrow E61 26D IC, a Grade 2 single cylinder deadlock with SFIC prep less core for 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch doors; the Deltana CL200LAIC, a Grade 2 single cylinder deadbolt with interchangeable core prep and a 2-3/4 inch backset; and the Delaney LM Series 301702, a Grade 1 single cylinder less core deadbolt in dull chrome US26D with a thumbturn inside.
11) The tenant needs a key to get out as well as in - what replaces the Design Hardware D1 for that?
The Design Hardware D1 is a single cylinder with a blank plate inside, so there is no key or turn on the inside face at all. For key operation from both sides, the Dexter DB1000-DCT is a Grade 1 double cylinder deadbolt for 1-3/8 inch to 1-7/8 inch doors, the Hager 3214 is a Grade 2 double cylinder deadbolt on a Schlage C keyway matching the D1 keyway for 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch doors, and the Delaney LU Series 320601 is a Grade 2 double cylinder deadbolt in stainless steel US32D. Double cylinder use is governed by the egress code for the occupancy.
12) My spec calls for a fire rated deadbolt - which alternatives to the Design Hardware D1 carry a fire rating?
The Design Hardware D1 is UL listed for A label 3 hour fire doors. Among alternatives, the Cal-Royal CRB800 is a Grade 1 heavy duty single cylinder deadbolt with a UL 3-hour fire rated latch, and the Hager 3118 Grade 1 classroom deadbolt, Hager 3115 and Hager 3215 Grade 2 deadbolts all carry a fire rating and cover 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch doors. Confirm the rated opening's hardware schedule before substituting.
13) Do I have to specify handing on the Design Hardware D1 deadbolt?
No handing to call out. The D1 is non-handed and completely reversible, and the latchface has a self adjusting front that works on either a square or a beveled door edge. Same part goes on a left hand or right hand opening.
14) How secure is the D1 deadbolt against sawing or wrenching the cylinder?
Two things do the work. The bolt is solid brass with a hardened steel anti-saw pin insert, so a blade in the gap between door and frame doesn't get through it. Outside, the cylinder sits in a free spinning collar that turns under a wrench instead of transmitting torque to the cylinder. Chassis is steel, zinc dichromated against corrosion, and the whole assembly is rated Extra Heavy Duty.
15) Do I need to buy screws or a strike separately for this deadbolt?
No. It ships with the 1-1/8 x 2-3/4 inch square corner strike, combination screws that suit either wood or metal doors and frames, and two keys on the conventional cylinder. The one thing you supply is an SFIC core, if you order the SFIC version.
16) What else is a Grade 1 cylinder x blank deadlock for a 1-3/4 inch commercial door?
The closest match is the Corbin Russwin DL3211, a Grade 1 cylindrical deadlock in cylinder x blank on a 1-3/4 inch door, same as the D1. If the door is thicker than 1-3/4, the Corbin Russwin DL3011 is the one that goes to 2-1/4 inches. The Corbin Russwin DL2211 is also cylinder x blank at 1-3/4 inches but is a classroom function, which behaves differently at the door.
17) Is there a lighter duty deadbolt than the Design Hardware D1 for an interior office door?
The Design Hardware D1 is a Grade 1 extra heavy duty deadbolt. Where an opening does not call for Grade 1, the Arrow DBX61 is a Grade 2 single cylinder deadbolt with a thumbturn inside, the Cal-Royal CB160 is a Grade 2 single cylinder deadbolt with a tamper-resistant cylinder guard, and the Dexter DB2000-SCT is a Grade 2 single cylinder deadbolt covering 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch doors. Below that, the Cal-Royal ED500 and Cal-Royal LSD are Grade 3 single cylinder deadbolts, both for 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch doors, with the LSD carrying an ADA ergonomic thumbturn.
18) Can I use an Arrow E60 exit deadlock in place of the Design Hardware D1 single cylinder deadbolt?
No - they are opposite functions. The Arrow E60 is a Grade 2 non-keyed exit deadlock built as blank plate x thumbturn, so the plain plate faces out and the turn faces in, for 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch doors. The Design Hardware D1 is the reverse: a keyed single cylinder outside with the blank plate inside, in a Schlage C keyway with two keys supplied. Swapping one for the other puts the keyed side on the wrong face of the door.
19) Is the Corbin Russwin DL2211 a substitute for the Design Hardware D1 cylinder by blank deadbolt?
Not directly. The Corbin Russwin DL2211 is a Grade 1 cylindrical deadlock in cylinder x blank for 1-3/4 inch doors, so the door prep side matches the Design Hardware D1 at 1-3/4 inch, but the DL2211 is a classroom function, which is a different keyed operation from the D1 single cylinder deadbolt. Where a straight cylinder-outside, blank-inside deadbolt is wanted, the Corbin Russwin DL3211 carries the deadbolt function on 1-3/4 inch doors.
20) I ordered a Design Hardware D1 but received an Arrow 460 - is that the same thing?
No. The Arrow 460 is a mortise lock strike for latchbolt and deadbolt functions with a straight lip - it is the frame-side plate, not a lock. The Design Hardware D1 is the deadbolt itself and comes with its own 1-1/8 inch x 2-3/4 inch square corner strike. The same applies to the BEST 8T tubular deadbolt tube component and the Baldwin 8BR0618001 deadbolt spacer, which are pieces of a lock rather than a complete keyed deadbolt.
21) The crossbore on my door is already off-standard - is there a deadbolt with an adjustable backset instead of the Design Hardware D1 fixed 2-3/4 inch?
The Design Hardware D1 uses a fixed 2-3/4 inch backset. Where the existing bore does not line up, the Falcon D111 is a Grade 1 classroom deadbolt with an adjustable backset, the Cal-Royal ED500 is a Grade 3 single cylinder deadbolt with an adjustable backset for 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch doors, and the Brinks Raleigh E2401 and Mendocino E2402 single cylinder deadbolts both use a 4-way adjustable backset in round and square trim.
22) What deadbolt should I use where the door has no interior bore at all, unlike the Design Hardware D1?
The Design Hardware D1 is prepped for a 2-1/8 inch crossbore through the door with a blank plate covering the inside face. Where only one face can be bored, the Callan 205S is a Grade 3 one-sided half-bore deadbolt. Surface-applied options that avoid the through-bore entirely include the Codelocks CL200 surface deadbolt with key override and the Codelocks CL2200 electronic surface deadbolt.
23) What finishes does the Design Hardware D1 Series deadbolt come in?
Six: 605 bright brass, 606 satin brass, 613 oil rubbed bronze, 619 satin nickel, 625 bright chrome, and 626 satin chrome. Each one is available with either the conventional or the SFIC cylinder, so matching the rest of an opening does not force a cylinder decision.
24) Does an electronic deadbolt cover the same opening as the Design Hardware D1?
They solve different problems. The Design Hardware D1 is a mechanical Grade 1 deadbolt keyed on a conventional Schlage C cylinder with two keys supplied. Credential-based alternatives include the Dormakaba Saffire LX-D, an RFID electronic deadbolt with BLE and an electronic lock override; the Dormakaba Nova-D, an RFID multihousing smart electronic deadbolt; the Delaney KP400, a Grade 2 electronic deadbolt with a programmable remote; and the Codelocks CL2200, a medium duty electronic surface deadbolt in brushed steel. These change the door prep and the credential scheme rather than dropping into a mechanical deadbolt's place.
25) For a decorative entry that still needs a deadbolt, what are the alternatives to the Design Hardware D1?
The Design Hardware D1 is a commercial-duty deadbolt in brass with a free spinning cylinder collar that resists wrenching and prying, offered in finishes from oil rubbed bronze through satin chrome. Where the look drives the choice, the Emtek #11 Tuscany is a lost wax cast bronze deadbolt in cylinder x thumbturn, the Emtek 8323 Modern Disc is a brass double cylinder deadbolt, and the Baldwin Reserve DC.CRD and DC.CSD are double cylinder contemporary deadbolts in round and square trim respectively. The Bravura 310RC Elite and 310SC Elite are Grade 2 contemporary deadbolts in round and square trim with a thumbturn inside.
