Design Hardware D2-D-26D – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Can this deadbolt go on a fire rated door?
The D2 deadbolt is UL Listed for A Label 3 hour fire doors. Keep in mind the double cylinder function has no inside thumbturn, so on any opening in a means of egress you need to confirm your local code accepts a double keyed bolt there.
2) Will the bolt reach my existing deadbolt strike, and what strike comes with it?
The bolt is a solid brass deadbolt with a 1 inch throw and a hardened steel anti-saw pin, and the supplied strike is a 1-1/8 by 2-3/4 inch square corner. A 1 inch throw is the standard commercial deadbolt projection, so it will engage an existing ANSI square corner strike pocket in most metal frames. If your frame has a rounded corner cutout, plan on a strike swap.
3) Does the D2 deadbolt take Schlage C keys so I can key it into my existing building system?
Yes. It uses a conventional cylinder in Schlage C keyway, six pin brass, which is the most common commercial keyway in North America, so your locksmith can key it into an existing SC1/C system. Two keys ship with it. Order the KA option to have multiple locks keyed alike, or KD for keyed different.
4) The Design Hardware D2 fits only 1-3/4 inch doors. What double cylinder deadbolt works on a thinner door?
The D2 is built for 1-3/4 inch thick doors. For a thinner leaf, the Dexter DB2000-DCT is a Grade 2 double cylinder deadbolt rated 1-3/8 to 1-3/4 inches, the Dexter DB1000-DCT covers 1-3/8 to 1-7/8 inches in Grade 1, and the Deltana 7312KA2 spans 1-3/8 to 2 inches. The Hager 3214 double cylinder deadbolt also lists 1-3/8 to 1-3/4 inches with a Schlage C keyway.
5) Which deadbolt should I use instead of a double cylinder when egress code requires a thumbturn inside?
A double cylinder deadbolt such as the Design Hardware D2 is keyed on both sides, so where the inside must operate without a key you need a cylinder by thumbturn function. The Hager 3215 is a Grade 2 single cylinder deadbolt with a 1 inch throw, the Dexter DB2000-SCT is the Grade 2 single cylinder version for 1-3/8 to 1-3/4 inch doors, and the Cal-Royal CB160 is a Grade 2 single cylinder deadbolt with a tamper-resistant cylinder guard. For a non-keyed exit, the Arrow E60 is a Grade 2 exit deadlock with a blank plate outside and a thumbturn inside.
6) What is a direct cross for the Design Hardware D2 double cylinder deadbolt in another brand?
The Design Hardware D2 is a Grade 2 double cylinder deadbolt with a 2-3/4 inch backset and a Schlage C keyway conventional cylinder. The closest peer on those points is the Hager 3214, a Grade 2 double cylinder deadbolt with a Schlage C keyway, which covers doors 1-3/8 to 1-3/4 inches. The Dexter DB2000-DCT is also a Grade 2 double cylinder deadbolt for 1-3/8 to 1-3/4 inch doors, and the Delaney LU Series 320601 is a Grade 2 double cylinder deadbolt supplied in stainless steel US32D.
7) If I need a Grade 1 deadbolt instead of Grade 2, what are my options?
The Design Hardware D2 carries a Grade 2 rating. For a Grade 1 bored deadbolt, the Dexter DB1000-DCT is a Grade 1 double cylinder deadbolt for 1-3/8 to 1-7/8 inch doors and the DB1000-SCT is the Grade 1 cylinder by thumbturn version. The Accentra D111 is a Grade 1 single cylinder deadbolt with a 2-3/8 inch backset for 1-3/8 to 1-3/4 inch doors, and the Delaney LM Series 301702 is a Grade 1 single cylinder less-core deadbolt in US26D. In cylindrical deadlocks, the Corbin Russwin DL3011 is Grade 1 cylinder by blank and covers 1-3/4 to 2-1/4 inch doors.
8) Which deadbolts look like substitutes for the Design Hardware D2 but will not drop into the same door prep?
The D2 is a bored deadbolt using an ANSI A115.2 2-1/8 inch crossbore with a 2-3/4 inch backset. Several deadbolts in the same family of names do not use that prep. The Emtek 2050 and 2051 are European mortise deadbolts with an integrated roller latch. The Dormakaba D900 is a small case mortise deadbolt, and the Codelocks CL200 and CL2200 are surface-mounted deadbolts. The Baldwin 8BR0618001 is a deadbolt spacer, not a lock, and the Arrow 460 is a mortise lock strike.
9) Do I have to order a left or right hand version of this deadbolt?
No handing to specify. The D2 deadbolt is non-handed and completely reversible, and the front is self adjusting for square or beveled door edges, so one part covers either swing. That is useful for a property manager stocking spares across a building.
10) What is included in the box, and do I need separate screws for a metal door?
Each D2 deadbolt ships with two standard keys and combination screws that work in either wood or metal doors and frames, so no separate fastener pack is needed. The strike is the 1-1/8 by 2-3/4 inch square corner type.
11) Is this deadbolt strong enough for an apartment entry or high traffic tenant door?
It is rated commercial, extra heavy duty, with a steel chassis zinc dichromated for corrosion resistance and a free spinning cylinder collar that resists wrenching and prying. That collar and the anti-saw pin in the bolt are the two features that matter most on an exposed exterior tenant door.
12) What else could I buy if I need a double cylinder deadbolt in a different grade or thickness range?
A few double cylinder alternatives ZenSupply carries: Dexter DB1000 is Grade 1 and covers 1-3/8 to 1-7/8 inch doors, Dexter DB2000 is Grade 2 for 1-3/8 to 1-3/4 inch, Delaney LU Series is Grade 2 in stainless US32D, Callan 210S is Grade 3, and Deltana 7312KA2 is Grade 3 covering 1-3/8 to 2 inch doors. For decorative residential work, Baldwin Reserve offers double cylinder contemporary round and square trims.
13) What is a lighter-duty double cylinder deadbolt than the Design Hardware D2?
The Design Hardware D2 is a commercial Grade 2 double cylinder deadbolt. Where a lighter residential-weight double cylinder will do, the Callan Model 210S is a Grade 3 double cylinder deadbolt and the Deltana 7312KA2 is a Grade 3 double cylinder deadbolt covering 1-3/8 to 2 inch doors. The Emtek 8323 Modern Disc is a brass double cylinder deadbolt with decorative disc trim.
14) What should I use in place of the Design Hardware D2 if the classroom door needs a keyed outside and a blank inside plate?
The D2 is keyed on both faces. For a cylinder by blank plate deadlock, the Corbin Russwin DL3211 is Grade 1 for 1-3/4 inch doors and the DL2211 is a Grade 1 cylindrical deadlock, also 1-3/4 inch. In single cylinder classroom deadbolts, the Falcon D111 is Grade 1 heavy duty with an adjustable backset and the Falcon D211 is the Grade 2 medium duty classroom function; the Hager 3118 is a Grade 1 classroom deadbolt with a Schlage C keyway and 6-pin cylinder.
15) Is there an electronic or keypad alternative to the Design Hardware D2 deadbolt?
The D2 is a keyed mechanical deadbolt with two standard keys supplied. For credential or code entry instead, the Delaney KP400 is a Grade 2 electronic deadbolt with a programmable remote, the Dormakaba Saffire LX-D is an RFID electronic deadbolt with BLE and electronic lock override, the Dormakaba Nova-D is an RFID multihousing smart deadbolt, and the Codelocks CL2210 is an electronic mortise deadbolt.
16) What deadbolt matches the Design Hardware D2 on keyway if I am keying to an existing Schlage C system?
The Design Hardware D2 uses a conventional Schlage C keyway cylinder and can be ordered keyed alike across multiple locks. Peers listed on the same keyway include the Hager 3214 double cylinder deadbolt, the Hager 3115 Grade 2 cylinder by thumbturn deadbolt, and the Hager 3118 Grade 1 classroom deadbolt with a 6-pin cylinder. The Dormakaba D900 mortise deadbolt is supplied keyed different with SC keyways.
17) What do I order instead of the Design Hardware D2 when the door has no interior bore or I only need one face worked?
The D2 requires a full 2-1/8 inch crossbore through the door for a cylinder on each face. Where only one side can be prepped, the Callan Model 205S is a Grade 3 one-sided half-bore deadbolt. For a surface application with no through-bore at all, the Codelocks CL200 is a surface deadbolt with key override.
18) What finishes does the Design Hardware D2 deadbolt come in?
Five finishes are offered: 605 bright brass, 606 satin brass, 613 oil rubbed bronze, 619 satin nickel, and 626 satin chrome. For matching existing hardware across a building, 626 satin chrome and 613 oil rubbed bronze are the usual commercial matches to 26D and 10B trim.
19) Which latchface sizes are available on the D2 deadbolt?
Two latchfaces are offered at the 2-3/4 inch backset: the standard 1-1/8 by 2-1/4 inch, and a 1 by 2-1/4 inch version. Both use the self adjusting front, so either works on a square or beveled door edge. Pick the 1 inch face when you are dropping into an existing narrower edge mortise.
