Design Hardware D1-S-26D – Frequently Asked Questions
1) What door prep does the D1 deadbolt need, and will it drop into an existing bore?
Standard ANSI A115.2 prep: a 2-1/8 inch crossbore with a 2-3/4 inch backset. If the door already has that prep from another commercial deadbolt, the D1 goes straight in. Note the backset is fixed at 2-3/4 inches, so a door bored at 2-3/8 inches will not take it. The Accentra D111 is the 2-3/8 inch backset option.
2) Will this deadbolt latch into the strike already in my frame?
The D1 ships with a 1-1/8 x 2-3/4 inch square corner strike and throws a 1 inch solid brass bolt. A 1 inch throw needs a full-depth pocket behind the strike, so if you are replacing a shallow residential strike, swap in the supplied one and check the frame pocket depth rather than reusing the old plate.
3) Do I need to order the conventional or the SFIC version of the D1 deadbolt?
Pick SFIC if your building is already keyed on small format interchangeable cores, that version ships prepped less core so you supply your own. Pick the conventional cylinder if you are not on an IC system: it comes as a 6 pin brass cylinder in Schlage C keyway with two keys, so it keys into most existing C keyway systems.
4) I need a deadbolt for a door thinner than 1-3/4 inch. What should I use instead of the D1 Series?
The D1 Series is built for 1-3/4 inch thick doors. For thinner doors, the Dexter DB2000-SCT is a Grade 2 cylinder x thumbturn deadbolt rated 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch, and the Dexter DB1000-SCT is a Grade 1 version rated 1-3/8 inch to 1-7/8 inch. 5) What is a direct Grade 1 single cylinder deadbolt alternative to the Design Hardware D1 Series?
Several Grade 1 cylinder x thumbturn deadbolts cover the same function. The Delaney LM Series (301702) is a Grade 1 single cylinder less core deadbolt in Dull Chrome US26D. The Deltana CL200LM is a Grade 1 single cylinder deadbolt. The Dexter DB1000-SCT is a Grade 1 cylinder x thumbturn deadbolt that fits doors 1-3/8 inch to 1-7/8 inch thick, a wider range than the D1 Series, which is built for 1-3/4 inch doors. The Accentra D111 is Grade 1 cylinder x thumbturn with a 2-3/8 inch backset, where the D1 Series uses a 2-3/4 inch backset.
6) What is the Grade 1 option if I need a key on both sides instead of a thumbturn?
The D1 Series is a single cylinder deadbolt, cylinder outside and thumbturn inside. For key-both-sides, the Dexter DB1000-DCT is a Grade 1 double cylinder deadbolt for doors 1-3/8 inch to 1-7/8 inch. Lighter-duty double cylinder options include the Dexter DB2000-DCT and Delaney LU Series (320601) in Grade 2, and the Callan 210S and Deltana 7312KA2 in Grade 3. Note that double cylinder deadbolts are restricted on egress doors in many jurisdictions.
7) I need a classroom-function deadbolt, not cylinder x thumbturn. What takes the place of the D1?
The D1 Series is cylinder x thumbturn, so it will not serve a classroom deadbolt spec. The Falcon D111 is a Grade 1 heavy duty classroom deadbolt with adjustable backset, and the Hager 3118 is a Grade 1 classroom deadbolt with a Schlage C keyway and 6-pin cylinder, matching the D1 Series keyway. The Falcon D211 is the Grade 2 medium duty classroom version. For cylinder outside and blank plate inside, the Corbin Russwin DL3211 and DL3011 are Grade 1 cylindrical deadlocks.
8) Which deadbolts share the Schlage C keyway with the Design Hardware D1 so I can key them on one system?
The D1 Series ships with a conventional 6-pin brass cylinder in the Schlage C keyway. The Hager 3115 and Hager 3214 are Grade 2 deadbolts with Schlage C keyway, and the Hager 3118 is a Grade 1 classroom deadbolt with Schlage C keyway and a 6-pin cylinder. For interchangeable core sites, the D1 is also offered prepped for small format IC less core, as are the Delaney LM Series (301702), the Deltana CL200LAIC, and the Arrow E61 SFIC prep less core.
9) Which products look like substitutes for the D1 Series deadbolt but will not work as one?
A few in the same aisle are not equivalents. The Arrow 460 is a mortise lock strike, not a lock. The Baldwin Reserve 8BR0618001 is a deadbolt spacer and the BEST 8T is a tubular deadbolt tube component, both parts rather than complete locks. 10) Is there another Grade 1 deadbolt with a UL fire rating comparable to the D1 Series?
The D1 Series is UL Listed for A Label 3 hour fire doors. The Cal-Royal CRB800 is a Grade 1 heavy duty single cylinder deadbolt with a UL 3-hour fire rated latch. Hager's 3115, 3118, 3215 and 3214 deadbolts also carry a fire rating, with the 3118 being the Grade 1 unit of that group.
11) Can I get several of these deadbolts keyed alike for one building?
Yes. Keying is a required selection: keyed different (KD) is standard, or keyed alike (KA) when you want one key to run multiple locks on a unit or a set of closets. Each lock includes two standard keys plus combination screws that work in wood or metal doors and frames.
