Design Hardware DH-D2-S-26D – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Will the Design Hardware D2 deadbolt fit a 1-3/8 inch door?
No. The D2 Series deadbolt is built for 1-3/4 inch doors only, so a 1-3/8 inch door (common on older interior openings) needs a different deadbolt. On the 1-3/4 inch door it drops into a standard ANSI A115.2 prep: 2-1/8 inch crossbore at a 2-3/4 inch backset.
2) Can I swap a D2 deadbolt into the existing bore where an old deadbolt was?
If the old lock was bored to the ANSI A115.2 standard, yes. The D2 uses a 2-1/8 inch crossbore with a 2-3/4 inch backset, which is the standard commercial prep, and the front is self adjusting for square or beveled door edges. The frame side wants a 1-1/8 by 2-3/4 inch square corner strike. Two latchface options exist: 1-1/8 by 2-1/4 inches standard, or 1 by 2-1/4 inches, both at the 2-3/4 inch backset, so you can match the mortise cut already in the door edge.
3) Do I need to order a left hand or right hand version of the D2 deadbolt?
Handing is not a factor. The D2 deadbolt is non-handed and completely reversible, so one part covers both left and right hand doors. For a property manager stocking spares across a building, that means one deadbolt on the shelf instead of two.
4) Will a 1 inch deadbolt throw meet the fire door requirement on my commercial opening?
The D2 deadbolt throws a full 1 inch and is UL Listed for "A" label 3 hour fire doors. The bolt itself is solid brass with an anti-saw hardened steel pin insert. That 1 inch throw is what lets it reach into the 1-1/8 by 2-3/4 inch square corner strike with enough engagement for a commercial frame.
5) What is the difference between the conventional cylinder and the SFIC version of the D2 deadbolt?
Two builds. The conventional cylinder ships as a 6 pin brass cylinder in Schlage C keyway with two keys included, ready to hang. The SFIC version is prepped for a small format interchangeable core and ships less core, so you supply the core from your own keying system. If your facility already runs SFIC and you control the cores, take the SFIC. If this is a one-off door, the conventional saves you a core purchase. Both builds come in all six finishes.
6) Can I get several D2 deadbolts keyed alike so one key opens all of them?
Yes. Keying is a required choice on the order: KD keyed different is standard, and KA keyed alike is the option when you want one key across multiple locks, which is the usual pick for a landlord doing a whole building or a contractor turning over a suite of doors. The conventional cylinder is Schlage C keyway, so it can also fold into an existing C keyway system.
7) Single cylinder vs double cylinder deadbolt: which one do I need on an exit door?
The D2 in this configuration is cylinder by thumbturn, meaning key on the outside and a thumbturn on the inside. That is what most codes require on an egress door, since anyone inside can throw or retract the bolt without a key. If the door has glass next to the lock and your local code allows a double cylinder there, this single cylinder model is not that part. For accessible openings the inside thumbturn here is the 2 inch ADA style.
8) Does the D2 deadbolt come with screws for a hollow metal door and frame, or do I need to buy them?
Fasteners are in the box. The D2 ships with combination screws that work in either wood or metal doors and frames, plus two standard keys on the conventional cylinder build. If you take the SFIC build, the core is the one thing you still have to source.
9) Is a Grade 2 deadbolt tough enough for an apartment entry or a commercial back door?
The D2 is rated Commercial and meets and exceeds ANSI A156.2 Grade 2, which is the standard grade for multi-family and light commercial entry doors. The security detail that matters day to day: a free spinning cylinder collar that resists wrenching and prying, a steel chassis zinc dichromated against corrosion, and a solid brass bolt with a hardened steel anti-saw pin. For a high-traffic institutional main entrance, a Grade 1 deadbolt is the heavier spec.
10) What finishes does the Design Hardware D2 deadbolt come in, and which ones hold up outdoors?
Six finishes: 605 bright brass, 606 satin brass, 613 oil rubbed bronze, 619 satin nickel, 625 bright chrome, and 626 satin chrome. Every one of the six is available in both the conventional and the SFIC cylinder build. Design Hardware's standard finish list also includes PVD versions of the bright brass and satin chrome tones, which are lifetime finishes and the ones to ask for on an exterior door.
