1) What does the double cylinder function on the Detex 1010D actually do?
Double cylinder means there are key cylinders on both sides of the opening. The push bar always gives free egress from inside, and the exterior cylinder retracts the latch for entry, while the second cylinder is used on the inside. Detex builds it on a stainless steel deadlocking Pullman-type latch bolt, so once latched the bolt resists being carded or shimmed at the strike. If you only need entry keying from outside, order a different function in the 10 Series instead.
2) Do I need to specify handing when ordering the Detex Advantex 10 Series rim device?
Yes. Even though the device chassis itself is non-handed, the order requires you to pick Right Hand Reverse or Left Hand Reverse. Stand outside the opening: if the door swings out toward you and is hinged on the right, it's right hand reverse. Get this wrong and the cylinder and trim orientation won't match the opening.
3) Which strike do I order with the Detex 1010D, the 99 surface or the 98 semi-mortise?
Two strikes are offered. The 99 surface strike mounts on the face of the frame stop and is the usual choice on retrofits or where you don't want to cut the frame. The 98 semi-mortise strike sets into the frame for a flatter, cleaner installation and is the one to pick when the frame is being prepped new or you're matching an existing semi-mortise cut. Strike selection is required on the order.
4) Can I hold the Detex Advantex exit device unlocked during business hours?
Yes, if you order it with dogging. Three choices are offered: hex dogging (1/8 turn hex key holds the push bar depressed and the latch retracted), cylinder dogging (keyed, so only keyholders can dog it down), or less/no dogging. Note that fire rated openings cannot use mechanical dogging, so if you're ordering the fire rated version choose less/no dogging or the electric dogging option.
5) Is the Detex 1010D available fire rated and hurricane rated?
Four rating configurations are offered on the Advantex 1010D: fire rated, hurricane rated, hurricane and fire rated together, and non-rated. Coastal jobs with a wind-borne debris requirement should specify hurricane rated; a labeled stairwell or corridor door needs the fire rated build. The device is Grade 1.
6) Does the Detex Advantex 10 Series support delayed egress or request-to-exit signaling?
Yes. Electrified options on the 1010D include delayed egress, electric dogging, a hardwired electric alarm, and a request-to-exit signal switch, or you can order it with none. The RX switch is what you use to shunt an alarm or tell the access control system the bar was pushed; delayed egress is the build for loss-prevention or wander-management openings where code permits a delay.
7) Can I use a Detex 1010D on a wood door, and what is the alternative if not?
The Detex 1010D is not wood door compatible. Among rim exit devices that are, the Adams Rite 8700 Series 30 inch narrow stile device is wood door compatible and non-fire-rated, and the Adams Rite 3700 Series 30 inch narrow stile device is wood door compatible and fire rated. Both are Grade 1 like the 1010D but are narrow stile rather than wide stile.
8) My door has a narrow stile aluminum frame - what should I order instead of the Detex 1010D?
The 1010D is built for wide stile doors, so a narrow stile opening needs a narrow stile device. Narrow stile Grade 1 rim options include the Corbin Russwin ED4200 at 36 inches, the Falcon 19-R exit only at 36 inches for 1-3/4 inch doors, the TownSteel ED3700 and ED8900 at 36 inches, and the Adams Rite 8800 Series at 30 inches with a 1-3/4 inch to 2-1/4 inch door thickness range. The Adams Rite 3700 Series 30 inch narrow stile device is fire rated.
9) What is the closest wide stile Grade 1 rim exit device to the Detex 1010D Advantex if I need a 36 inch push pad device?
The Von Duprin 22-3FT is a 36 inch non-handed wide stile pushpad rim exit device rated Grade 1 for 1-3/4 inch doors. The Detex 1010D is also a Grade 1 wide stile rim device and comes in 36 inch and 48 inch sizes. Other Grade 1 wide stile options at 36 inches include the Corbin Russwin ED2200 exit only, the Corbin Russwin ED5200, the TownSteel ED1100 and the TownSteel ED9700. The 1010D differs in being a double cylinder function with hex or cylinder dogging choices and an offering of fire rated, hurricane rated, and hurricane and fire rated builds.

The Orca OED55 at 36 inches is also exit only.
11) Is a Cal-Royal 5000 or 5500 an equivalent replacement for a Detex 1010D Advantex?
They are not the same class of device. The Cal-Royal 5000 is a 36 inch wide rim exit device with a touch bar on a Grade 2 chassis, and the Cal-Royal 5500 is a 48 inch wide push bar device also Grade 2. The Detex 1010D is Grade 1. If the specification calls for Grade 1 wide stile hardware, look to the Dormakaba 8300 Series wide stile panic rim device or the Dormakaba 9300 Series 48 inch wide stile device, both Grade 1.
12) Is an SDC pressure sense bar or switch bar a substitute for a Detex 1010D Advantex rim exit device?

For a moderate-traffic office exit, a standard Grade 1 wide stile rim device such as the Corbin Russwin ED5200 or the Von Duprin 22 Series covers the same opening.
15) I need an exit-only bar with no keying, is the Detex 1010D the right model?
Not if you want exit only. The 1010D is the double cylinder function, so it is keyed on both sides. For an exit-only opening with no outside trim, look at a wide stile exit-only rim device such as the Corbin Russwin ED2200, the TownSteel ED1100, or the BEST Precision 2101 Series.
