1) Do I have to replace the whole floor closer, or can I just change the spindle?
If the closer body still holds hydraulic function and only the spindle is worn, rounded off, or bent, the spindle is a serviceable part on its own. The 74030 is catalogued by Dormakaba as a replacement part for the BTS Series, so a spindle swap is the intended repair rather than pulling and re-setting the whole floor closer and cement case. Replacing the closer body means breaking out the floor pocket; replacing the spindle does not.
2) Is the 74030 spindle a complete closer, or do I need other parts to finish the job?
Spindle only. The 74030 does not include a closer body, a cement case, a top pivot, or door hardware. On a BTS repair you will normally also want the top center pivot and the closer cover plate in hand, since those are what come off to reach the spindle, and any that are damaged should be swapped while the door is down.
3) My BTS door sags and drags on the floor. Is a new spindle the fix?
Sometimes, but check the cause first. A worn or bent spindle lets the door drop and wander, and a 74030 replacement corrects that on a BTS Series closer. A sag caused by a failed top pivot, a loose bottom arm fastener, or a leaking closer body will not be fixed by a spindle. Pull the cover plate, put a level on the door, and see whether the play is in the spindle itself before ordering.
4) Can I use a Dorma 74030 spindle on a surface mounted door closer or a Dorma overhead unit?
No. The 74030 is a floor closer spindle for the BTS Series only. A surface mounted overhead closer drives the door through an arm and shoe, not a spindle, so there is nothing on it this part fits. Concealed overhead and other Dormakaba closer families take their own spindles and arms as well, so match the part to the closer family stamped on the unit.
