DORMA 9000 Series Exit Device
Heavy Duty Exit Device

The 9000 Series heavy-duty exit device provides superior durability while the smooth reduced projection touchbar assembly minimizes catch hazards.

For paired doors where a full-width opening is only occasionally required, removable mullions are used. Doors are fitted with rim exit devices and normally function as single doors. Steel and aluminum mullions are available in 8' or 10' lengths.

Available motorized latch retraction (MLR).

  • Heavy duty cast chassis, available in wide or narrow stile
  • Antimicrobial protected coating
  • Motorized latch retraction (MLR) available
  • Complies with NFPA life safety code and AD
  • CBC-compliant option (BF) for maximum 5 lb operating force (9300, 9500, 9700)
  • The Motorized latch retraction features a whisper-quiet motor and operates quietly

Features
Available Finishes

The 9000 Series is available in architectural finishes as well as powder coated finishes. A full complement of free wheeling lever trim is available in a wide range of architectural finishes.

Applications

This premium exit device is built for high impact applications such as schools, universities and other institutional or commercial buildings.

DORMA Solutions

All standard devices and trim are designed for 1-3/4”- 2-1/4” thick doors. For door thickness greater than 2-1/4”, consult DORMA Technical Service.

Motorized Latch Retraction

The MLR feature retracts the latch using a whisper quiet motor, drawing in the touch bar, thus retracting the latch. The device can be activated by a variety of credentials and also has the ability to electrically hold/dog the exit push bar in a retracted position during non-secure hours.

Dormakaba 9400B-613 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Do I need to specify left or right hand when ordering a DORMA 9400 exit device?
No handing to specify. The 9400 is non-handed, so one part number covers both a left hand and a right hand opening. Pick finish and the 36 inch device length and you're done on that count.
2) Can the DORMA 9400 be used on a fire rated door?
No. The 9400 as configured is not fire rated, so it belongs on non-rated openings only. If the opening is a rated pair, you need a fire rated (fire exit hardware) vertical rod device instead, and those cannot be field dogged. Worth noting the 9400 does carry hex key dogging, which is itself only permitted on non-rated doors.
3) Does the DORMA 9400 vertical rod device secure a pair of doors without a mullion?
Yes, that is the reason to pick a vertical rod device. It latches at the head and at the threshold rather than into the jamb, so a pair of doors can be fitted with two of them and the full opening clears with no center post in the way. If you'd rather use rim devices, DORMA's removable steel or aluminum mullions in 8 foot or 10 foot lengths let the pair function as single doors and come out when you need the full width.
4) Will a wide stile exit device like the DORMA 9400 work on an aluminum storefront door?
Usually not. The 9400 is a wide stile device with a heavy cast chassis, sized for wood and hollow metal doors with a full stile. Narrow stile aluminum storefront doors don't give the pushpad chassis enough face to land on. DORMA builds the 9000 Series chassis in narrow stile as well, so a glass front installer working storefront should be ordering the narrow stile version of the series, not the 9400.
5) Does the DORMA 9400 come with lever trim, or is it push bar only?
Exit only. The 9400 as listed has no outside trim, so the door pushes open from the inside and there is no key or lever entry from the pull side. If crews need to get back in through that door, you have to order lever trim separately. DORMA offers free wheeling lever trim across the 9000 Series in a range of architectural finishes.
6) Can you hold the DORMA 9400 push bar down so the door stays unlocked during business hours?
Yes, two ways. Mechanically, the 9400 ships with hex key dogging, so a hex wrench holds the pushpad depressed and the latches retracted for open hours. If you want it on a schedule or on a card reader, the 9000 Series is available with motorized latch retraction, which draws the touch bar in with a quiet motor and can electrically hold the bar retracted during non-secure hours. MLR is an option to specify at order, not something you add later.
7) What strike comes with the DORMA 9400 exit device?
The 463 strike is standard with the 9400. That's the top strike the vertical rod latches into at the head of the frame, so on a new install you are not sourcing it separately. If you are replacing an existing device, plan on setting the new strike rather than reusing the old one.
8) Are mounting screws included with the DORMA 9400, and will they work on a hollow metal door?
Wood and machine screws come standard, which covers a wood door and a tapped hollow metal door. On fire rated and hurricane applications DORMA supplies sex nuts and bolts instead, since those openings need the device through-bolted rather than screwed into the face.
9) Is the DORMA 9400 heavy duty enough for a school or a high traffic entrance?
That's what it's built for. Grade 1 heavy duty, with a cast chassis and a reduced projection touchbar that keeps the bar from catching bags and carts as people push through. DORMA positions the 9000 Series for high impact use in schools, universities and other institutional and commercial buildings. Grade 1 is the top ANSI/BHMA durability tier for exit hardware.
10) Does the DORMA 9400 meet ADA and life safety requirements for an exit door?
The 9000 Series complies with NFPA life safety code and ADA. If your jurisdiction is on the California Building Code and enforces the 5 pound maximum operating force, DORMA offers a BF option to meet it, but that option applies to the 9300, 9500 and 9700 models, not the 9400.
11) Is the DORMA 9400 a surface mounted rod or a concealed vertical rod device?
Surface mounted. The rods run on the face of the door above and below the chassis, which means it installs on an existing door without routing the door out, and the rods stay reachable for service. A concealed vertical rod hides the rods inside the door and looks cleaner, but it wants a door prepped for it, so it is the choice on new doors rather than a retrofit. For a contractor putting exit hardware on doors that are already hung, the surface device is the one that goes on.
12) What finishes does the DORMA 9400 exit device come in?
Fifteen finishes, covering both architectural and powder coated: 605 bright brass, 606 satin brass, 611 bright bronze, 612 satin bronze, 613 oil rubbed bronze, 619 satin nickel, 625 bright chrome, 626 satin chrome, 629 bright stainless, 630 satin stainless, 689 anodized aluminum, 691 light bronze, 693 black, 695 dark bronze and 696 satin brass. For a property manager matching a building already running 630 satin stainless on the other exits, that is the standard commercial pick and it is stocked here in the 36 inch device.
13) Does the DORMA 9400 have any antimicrobial coating for a healthcare or school corridor?
Yes, the 9000 Series touchbar devices carry an antimicrobial protected coating. On a push bar that every occupant contacts on the way out, that matters more than on most hardware, which is part of why the series shows up in schools and institutional buildings.
