DORMA 9000 Series Exit Device
Heavy Duty Exit Device

The 9000 Series heavy-duty exit device provides superior durability while the smooth reduced projection touchbar assembly minimizes catch hazards.

For paired doors where a full-width opening is only occasionally required, removable mullions are used. Doors are fitted with rim exit devices and normally function as single doors. Steel and aluminum mullions are available in 8' or 10' lengths.

Available motorized latch retraction (MLR).

  • Heavy duty cast chassis, available in wide or narrow stile
  • Antimicrobial protected coating
  • Motorized latch retraction (MLR) available
  • Complies with NFPA life safety code and AD
  • CBC-compliant option (BF) for maximum 5 lb operating force (9300, 9500, 9700)
  • The Motorized latch retraction features a whisper-quiet motor and operates quietly

Features
Available Finishes

The 9000 Series is available in architectural finishes as well as powder coated finishes. A full complement of free wheeling lever trim is available in a wide range of architectural finishes.

Applications

This premium exit device is built for high impact applications such as schools, universities and other institutional or commercial buildings.

DORMA Solutions

All standard devices and trim are designed for 1-3/4”- 2-1/4” thick doors. For door thickness greater than 2-1/4”, consult DORMA Technical Service.

Motorized Latch Retraction

The MLR feature retracts the latch using a whisper quiet motor, drawing in the touch bar, thus retracting the latch. The device can be activated by a variety of credentials and also has the ability to electrically hold/dog the exit push bar in a retracted position during non-secure hours.

Dormakaba F9400A-630 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Do I need to order the DORMA 9400 exit device left hand or right hand?
No handing to specify. The 9400 surface vertical rod device is non-handed, so one part number covers either swing. That matters on a pair of doors, where you order two identical devices rather than a matched left/right set.
2) Can I use a surface vertical rod exit device on a pair of doors without a mullion?
That is exactly what a surface vertical rod device like the DORMA 9400 is for. It latches at the head and the sill through the top and bottom rods, so a pair of doors secures against each other with no center mullion and you get the full clear opening. The alternative is a rim device on each leaf with a removable mullion between them, which DORMA offers in steel or aluminum in 8 foot or 10 foot lengths. Mullions suit openings that normally work as single doors and only occasionally need full width. Vertical rod is the choice when the full opening is used regularly and you do not want a post to take out and store.
3) Is the DORMA 9400 exit device fire rated, and can I dog it down?
The 9400 is a fire rated Grade 1 device, and that decides the dogging question. Fire rated exit devices cannot be held in a retracted, dogged state mechanically, so the fire rated build ships LD (less dogging) as standard. Hex key dogging is the dogging configuration on the non-fire version. If you need the pushbar held open during business hours on a rated opening, the route is motorized latch retraction (MLR), which can electrically hold the bar retracted during non-secure hours and release on alarm.
4) Does the DORMA 9400 exit device come with outside lever trim, or is it exit only?
Exit only as configured. The 9400 pushpad device gives you egress from the inside with no outside operating trim, so there is no lever or pull on the corridor side and no cylinder to key. If the opening needs re-entry from outside, lever trim is a separate line item. DORMA offers free wheeling lever trim for the 9000 Series in a range of architectural finishes.
5) Will the DORMA 9400 fit a narrow stile aluminum storefront door?
No. The 9400 is the wide stile build, meant for the wider stiles on hollow metal and wood doors. A narrow stile aluminum glass door needs the narrow stile version of the 9000 Series chassis instead, which DORMA builds for exactly that application. Ordering the wide stile device for a storefront leaf is the most common mistake on this family.
6) What is the LB (less bottom rod) option on the DORMA 9400 and should I order it?
LB drops the bottom rod and bottom latch, leaving the device latching only at the head. Order it where the bottom rod is a problem: dirty or wet floor conditions, carpet and threshold interference, ADA-sensitive floor lines, or a door that gets kicked around. You lose the bottom latch point, so the top latch and strike carry the security. On the 9400 the ordering choices are LD (less dogging, standard on the fire rated build), CD (cylinder dogging, cylinder included), and LB.
7) What strike comes with the DORMA 9400 vertical rod exit device?
The 463 strike is standard with the 9400. That is the top strike the vertical rod latch engages at the head of the frame, so on a new install the head strike is in the box and the frame gets prepped for it. Confirm your frame head has room for a surface applied strike before ordering, since the rod latches into it rather than into a mortised pocket.
8) Is the DORMA 9400 exit device heavy enough for a high school or campus exterior door?
It is built for that traffic. The 9400 is a Grade 1 heavy duty device on a cast chassis, aimed at high impact institutional and commercial openings such as schools and universities. The touchbar has a reduced projection to cut catch hazards in crowded corridors, and the device carries an antimicrobial protected coating, which matters on doors thousands of hands touch daily.
9) Can I tie a DORMA 9400 exit device into a card reader so the door unlocks electrically?
Yes, by specifying motorized latch retraction (MLR). MLR pulls the touchbar in with a motor to retract the latches, and it can be triggered by a range of credentials, so a card reader or access control release works against the device itself rather than a separate electric strike. It also holds the bar retracted electrically during non-secure hours, which is how you get push-pull free operation on a fire rated opening that cannot be mechanically dogged. The motor is quiet, which matters in a library or lobby.
10) What finishes does the DORMA 9400 exit device come in for matching existing doors in a building?
Fifteen finishes, covering both architectural and powder coated ranges: 605 bright brass, 606 satin brass, 611 bright bronze, 612 satin bronze, 613 oil rubbed bronze, 619 satin nickel, 625 bright chrome, 626 satin chrome, 629 bright stainless, 630 satin stainless, 689 anodized aluminum, 691 light bronze, 693 black, 695 dark bronze, and 696 satin brass. For a building standard, 630 satin stainless and 689 anodized aluminum are the two that most commonly match existing commercial hardware.
11) What is cylinder dogging (CD) on a DORMA exit device and when would I use it instead of hex key dogging?
Cylinder dogging holds the pushbar retracted with a key turn instead of an allen wrench, and the CD option on the 9400 includes the cylinder. Facilities pick CD when staff need to open and secure the door on a round without carrying a hex key, or when they want the dogging controlled by the same key system as the rest of the building. Hex key dogging is the standard configuration. Neither applies to the fire rated build, which is supplied LD, less dogging.
