Dormakaba E5031-XS-WL-626-41 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Which backset do I order for the E-Plex 5000 keypad lock, 2-3/8 or 2-3/4?
Order to match the hole already bored in your door. The E-Plex 5000 cylindrical is offered in a 2-3/8 inch backset and a 2-3/4 inch backset, with 2-3/4 inch being the standard option. There is also a 2-3/4 inch backset version with a 3/4 inch latch throw if you need deeper engagement into the strike; the standard latch throw is 1/2 inch. Measure from the door edge to the center of the bore and pick that number.
2) Will an E-Plex 5000 latch into the strike that is already in my frame?
The standard cylindrical latch throws 1/2 inch, which is what a normal ANSI cylindrical strike prep is cut for, so a like-for-like swap from another cylindrical lockset generally drops in. If your frame has a deeper strike pocket or the gap between door and frame is wide, order the 2-3/4 inch backset version with the 3/4 inch latch instead. The backset has to match the existing bore either way.
3) Can I put an E-Plex keypad lock on an aluminum storefront door?
Only if the stile is wide enough. The E-Plex 5000 cylindrical is a wide stile lock and wants a minimum 5 inch stile. Narrow stile aluminum entrances, typically well under that, will not take it. On a narrow stile glass door the usual route is an exit device with electronic trim rather than a bored cylindrical lock, and the E-Plex 5000 family does offer an exit trim configuration for that case.
4) Does the E-Plex 5000 need handing, and can I use it on a right hand door?
Handing is not an ordering decision here. The E-Plex 5000 cylindrical is non-handed and arrives pre-assembled for a left hand door, and the hand is changed in the field during install. One part number covers both hands, so a property manager buying for a mixed building only stocks one item.
5) What key override options can I get on a Dormakaba E-Plex 5000, and can I key it into my existing system?
Seven override choices. Two come with a cylinder in the lever: XS with a Kaba cylinder in Schlage C keyway, and XK with a Kaba cylinder in Kaba 90 keyway. The other five ship less core so you drop in your own and stay on your existing keying: B for SFIC (Best and equivalents, 6 or 7 pin), C for Corbin Russwin LFIC, M for Medeco, ASSA, Yale or Abloy LFIC (5 or 6 pin), R for Sargent LFIC, and S for Schlage LFIC. If your building is already keyed on SFIC, order B and use your own cores. Cores are not included on those five.
6) Is the E-Plex 5000 keypad lock approved for a fire rated door?
Yes. The cylindrical version carries a three-hour UL/ULC fire door rating for A labeled doors, and the lock is ANSI/BHMA Grade 1 certified under A156.25, A156.2, A156.13 and A156.3. It also meets ADA for accessibility. For an institutional buyer standardizing on a fire stair or corridor opening, that is the full set: the lock provides coded access from outside and free egress from inside.
7) I need keypad locks on doors thicker than 2 inches. What are my options besides the E-Plex?
The E-Plex 5000 cylindrical is the widest range we hold in a standalone keypad lock, going to 2-1/4 inches. Next closest is the SDC E75 Series battery powered electronic cylindrical lockset at 1-3/4 to 2-1/8 inches. Most of the alternatives stop at 2 inches or are single-thickness: the TownSteel XCE-2000 and XCE-9000 run 1-3/4 to 2 inches, and the Schlage CO-100 and TownSteel FCE-2000 are 1-3/4 inch only. On a 2-1/4 inch door the E-Plex is the one that fits.
8) I need a deadbolt with my keypad lock. Does the E-Plex 5000 cylindrical have one?
Not on the cylindrical. The bored cylindrical version is latch only, 1/2 inch throw standard or 3/4 inch optional. If you need a deadbolt behind the keypad, go to the American Standard mortise version of the E-Plex 5000, which is offered with or without a deadbolt and throws a 1 inch deadbolt plus a 3/4 inch latch on a 2-3/4 inch backset. The mortise takes a mortise pocket in the door, not a bore, so it is not a swap for an existing cylindrical prep.
9) What is the closest equivalent to the Dormakaba E-Plex 5000 cylindrical pushbutton lock from another brand?
The Alarm Lock Trilogy T2 DL2700 is the nearest match. Both are Grade 1 standalone electronic cylindrical locks with digital keypad entry and 100 user codes, and both accept interchangeable core key override - the DL2700 is IC/SFIC compatible, and the E-Plex 5000 offers SFIC (Best and equivalents, 6 or 7-pin) and LFIC options for Corbin Russwin, Medeco/ASSA/Yale/Abloy, Sargent and Schlage. The main difference is door thickness: the DL2700 covers 1-5/8 inch to 1-7/8 inch doors, while the E-Plex 5000 cylindrical covers 1-3/8 inch to 2-1/4 inch. On a thick door or a thin one, that range decides it.
10) What should I use instead of a pushbutton keypad lock if I need credentials or mobile access on the door?
Move to a reader-based lock. The Schlage NDEB is a Grade 1 ENGAGE Series cylindrical lock with a 2.4 GHz Bluetooth Low Energy reader and mobile-enabled multi-function operation, for 1-5/8 inch to 2 inch doors. The Schlage XE360M is a Grade 1 wireless tubular lock with a smart mobile reader in an offline push button function for 1-3/4 inch doors. The TownSteel FCE-2000 is a Grade 1 standalone motorized cylindrical classroom lockset using RFID cards on 1-3/4 inch doors. The E-Plex 5000 is a PIN-only device - access is by code, with mechanical key override, and no card or phone credential is read at the door.
11) Can I use an SDC Electra 7200 in place of an E-Plex 5000?
Not as a drop-in. The SDC Electra 7200 is a solenoid controlled cylindrical lock running on dual voltage 12/24VDC for 1-3/4 inch to 2 inch doors, so it is released by an access control system and needs power to the opening. The E-Plex 5000 installs on wood or metal doors with a four bolt installation and no wiring - LectroBolt eliminates wiring to or through the door - and grants entry from its own keypad. If you already have a panel and a power transfer at the hinge, the 7200 is the fit; if the door has no power and no head-end, the E-Plex is. SDC also builds the E75 Series, a battery-powered electronic cylindrical lockset with keypad access control for 1-3/4 inch to 2-1/8 inch doors, which is the standalone comparison rather than the 7200.
12) I need a keypad lock for a classroom that can be locked down from inside. Does the E-Plex 5000 do that?
No - for classroom intruder function, look at the TownSteel XCE-9000, an electronic classroom intruder cylindrical lockset with keypad for 1-3/4 inch to 2 inch doors, or the TownSteel FCE-4000, an RFID electronic intruder classroom cylindrical lockset for 1-3/4 inch doors; both are Grade 1 heavy duty. The E-Plex 5000 operation modes are PIN access, lockout, and passage, with passage toggled on and off or pre-programmed to relock after 1 to 24 hours. Lockout is set by a programming sequence at the keypad, not a teacher-side lockdown thumbturn, so it suits offices, stockrooms, mechanical rooms and staff entrances rather than a lockdown-code classroom.
13) Do I need a code lock on both sides of the door, and what do I order if I do?
The E-Plex 5000 cylindrical is a single-keypad lock - it provides exterior access by combination while allowing free egress, so the inside lever always retracts the latch. Where a code is required in both directions, such as a controlled corridor between two secured areas, the Alarm Lock DL5200 is a double-sided electronic cylindrical lock with 100 user capacity and battery operation for doors 1-5/8 inch to 1-7/8 inch. Confirm the egress requirement with the AHJ before specifying a lock that requires a code to leave.
14) Is the Kwikset SmartCode 912TNL an alternative to the E-Plex 5000 for an apartment building?
They are built for different doors. The Kwikset 912TNL ZW500 is a SmartCode electronic Tustin lever with Z-Wave technology in a keyed one side function for doors 1-3/8 inch to 2 inch - a residential smart lever that reports to a Z-Wave hub. The E-Plex 5000 is a commercial extra heavy-duty cylindrical lockset, ANSI/BHMA Grade 1 certified with a three-hour UL/ULC fire rating for A labeled doors, indoor and outdoor approved from -31 F to +151 F at the front housing, with solid cast housings and levers. For unit doors in a garden-style property the Kwikset function fits; for a rated corridor door, an exterior entry, or a mechanical room, the E-Plex is the one that carries the rating.
15) I have a Stanley QCL200 keyed Schlage C on the door now. Will the E-Plex 5000 keep my keying?
Yes. The Stanley QCL200 is a cylindrical lock furnished keyed different in the SC keyway with a 118F ANSI 1-1/8 inch by 2-3/4 inch strike. The E-Plex 5000 is offered with a key-in-lever Kaba cylinder in the Schlage C keyway included, ordered as the XS override option, so the existing Schlage C key stays in the ring. Order the backset to match what came out of the door - 2-3/4 inch standard, 2-3/4 inch with a 3/4 inch throw, or 2-3/8 inch.
16) Which keypad lock works on a 1-3/8 inch door?
The E-Plex 5000 cylindrical covers 1-3/8 inch to 2-1/4 inch, arriving pre-assembled for 1-5/8 inch to 2 inch doors and adjustable in the field. Among electronic peers, the Lockey E985 and E995 keypad lever locks also start at 1 3/8 inch, running to 1 3/4 inch. The Alarm Lock DL2700, DL4100 and DL5200 start at 1-5/8 inch, and the Schlage CO-100, TownSteel XCE-2000 and SDC E75 start at 1-3/4 inch. On a thin door, that narrows the field quickly.
17) How many people can I give codes to on an E-Plex 5000, and can I see who came through the door?
100 access codes standalone, expandable to 300 with the optional Excel-based software. Codes are 4 to 8 digits, set by you. The lock records its most recent 9,000 events in memory including any use of the mechanical key override, but you need the software to read that audit trail out; there is no display on the lock. Users sort into five authority levels: master, manager, access user, service (single event or single day codes you can set in advance, useful for a contractor coming Thursday), and maintenance, which grants no entry but can upload and download data.
18) Can the E-Plex 5000 be left unlocked during business hours?
Yes, that is the passage mode. You can toggle it on and off at the keypad, or pre-program it to relock automatically after a set number of hours, anywhere from 1 to 24. So a leasing office or a clinic entrance can be put into passage in the morning and relock itself that evening without anyone going back to the door. The lock also has a lockout mode when you want to shut all codes down, and a relock time after each valid entry adjustable from 2 to 20 seconds.
19) Can I install an E-Plex 5000 on an exterior gate or door that gets weather?
It is approved for indoor and outdoor use. The front housing is rated from -31 F to 151 F and the rear housing from -31 F to 130 F, so a north-country exterior door is within range. Construction is solid cast housings and solid cast levers with a cylindrical drive wear tested for outdoor duty, and the pushbuttons are vandal resistant metal rather than rubber, which is what usually fails first on an exterior keypad.
20) Do I have to run wiring to the door for a Dormakaba E-Plex 5000?
No wiring at all. The LectroBolt connection carries power and signal through the lock's own through-bolts, so nothing is run to or through the door and there are no wires to pinch during install. It is a four bolt installation on wood or metal. That is the practical difference against a wired electric lockset like the SDC Electra 7200, which is a solenoid controlled cylindrical lock running on 12 or 24VDC and needs a power transfer and a supply at the opening.
21) What comes in the box with an E-Plex 5000 cylindrical lock?
Lock assembly, installation manual, full scale template and the required mounting hardware. The template matters on a new door, since it gives you the bore and cross-bore layout without measuring. What is not in the box on the B, C, M, R and S override versions is the cylinder core, you supply that from your own keying. The XK and XS versions include a Kaba key-in-lever cylinder.
22) What is the difference between the E-Plex 5000 and an Alarm Lock Trilogy DL2700?
Both are Grade 1 standalone cylindrical keypad locks holding 100 user codes, and both take interchangeable cores. The split is door thickness. The Trilogy DL2700 covers 1-5/8 to 1-7/8 inch doors; the E-Plex 5000 cylindrical spans 1-3/8 to 2-1/4 inches, so it is the one that goes on a thin older interior door or a thick exterior door where the Trilogy will not reach. The E-Plex also carries a three-hour UL/ULC fire rating on the cylindrical latch.
23) Should I buy a pushbutton lock like the E-Plex 5000 or a credential reader lock?
Pick by whether you want to hand out anything physical. The E-Plex 5000 is PIN only, so there is nothing to issue, collect, or replace when someone leaves, and it is programmed at the keypad without a laptop at the door. If you would rather people carry a card or a phone, we hold the TownSteel FCE-2000 and FCE-4000 with RFID, the Schlage NDEB ENGAGE with a Bluetooth Low Energy reader, and the Schlage XE360M with a smart mobile reader. Card and mobile give you per-credential revocation; a PIN lock means the code has to be changed for everyone when one person leaves.
24) Can I use an E-Plex 5000 as the trim on an existing exit device instead of a cylindrical lock?
The E-Plex 5000 family includes a rim exit device configuration that works with most leading brands of exit devices, and that trim is non-handed. Two things to plan for: the exit device and its mounting hardware are not included, and the backset on exit trim varies by the device type you are mounting to. The cylindrical version described here is the bored lockset, not the exit trim, so specify which one you need when you order.
25) Is there a simpler keyless lock for an interior storage or gate door that does not need audit trail or 100 codes?
Yes - drop to a mechanical pushbutton. The Lockey 2830 is a mechanical pushbutton keyless knob lock with an auto-locking passage function, and the Lockey 1600 is a heavy duty mechanical keyless knob lock with an adjustable backset; both fit doors 1-1/8 inch to 2 inch. Neither uses batteries and neither records events. The E-Plex 5000 exists because you want the other things: up to 100 access codes expandable to 300 with the optional software, five authority levels, and 9,000 events in memory including use of the mechanical key override. If nobody is going to read an audit trail or manage users, the mechanical knob does the keyless part. Note the Lockeys are knobs, not levers, so they are not ADA lever hardware.
26) What is the difference between the E-Plex 5000 and the Lockey E985 and E995 electronic keypad lever locks?
Door thickness and override are what separate them. The Lockey E985 and E995 are electronic keypad lever locks with remote control; the E985 lists key override and the E995 is battery powered, and both cover doors 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch. The E-Plex 5000 cylindrical covers 1-3/8 inch to 2-1/4 inch, is ANSI/BHMA Grade 1 certified with a three-hour UL/ULC fire rating for A labeled doors, and carries vandal resistant metal pushbuttons. If the opening is a 2 inch or 2-1/4 inch commercial door, or it is a rated opening, the Lockeys will not reach it.
27) Which electronic cylindrical lock should I use on a bathroom or bedroom door instead of the E-Plex 5000?
The E-Plex 5000 is not a privacy lock - it grants exterior access by code with free egress, and its modes are PIN access, lockout and passage. For a privacy opening, the Schlage CO-100-CY-40-KP is a Grade 1 heavy duty standalone electronic cylindrical lock in privacy function with keypad and cylinder options for 1-3/4 inch doors, and the Alarm Lock Trilogy 4100 is a Grade 1 electronic cylindrical lock with privacy function and keypad for 1-5/8 inch to 1-7/8 inch doors. The CENTRIOS CEB100 is a Grade 1 smart Bluetooth cylindrical lock also in privacy function.
28) What is the difference between the E-Plex 5000 and the BEST 9KZ or Accentra nexTouch NTB613?
All three are keypad cylindrical locks. The BEST 9KZ is an EZ Series electronic keypad cylindrical lock with key override function, and the Accentra nexTouch NTB613 is a Grade 1 cylindrical keypad lock with pushbutton entry. What separates the E-Plex 5000 is the override breadth and the code management: key-in-lever cylinders in Kaba 90 or Schlage C keyway supplied with the lock, plus SFIC for Best and equivalents and LFIC for Corbin Russwin, Medeco/ASSA/Yale/Abloy, Sargent and Schlage, alongside 100 access codes upgradeable to 300 with the optional Excel-based software and five authority levels down to single-day service codes. If you are standardizing on a Best SFIC keying system, the 9KZ and the E-Plex B option both land in it.
29) Can I put a standard mechanical lever on the door instead and just key it?
Yes, if code control is not the point. The Marks USA 195RAB is a Grade 1 Survivor Series entry clutched lever lockset supplied less core, and the Marks USA 175RF SFIC is a Grade 2 storeroom clutched lever lockset, small format IC less core, with a 2-3/4 inch backset and ANSI strike. Both are mechanical and keyed. What you give up is what the E-Plex 5000 was bought for: 100 access codes so no keys are issued, controlled or collected, adjustable 4 to 8 digit code length, anti-tamper lockout from 3 to 9 invalid attempts, and 9,000 events in memory. On a door where turnover is high and rekeying is constant, that trade is the whole decision.
30) What is the difference between the E-Plex 5000 cylindrical and a passage lever like the Cal-Royal CAL30 or Marks 195N?
A passage lever never locks. The Cal-Royal CAL30 is a Grade 1 extra heavy duty passage lockset in the Calypso Series for doors 1-3/8 inch to 2 inch, and the Marks USA 195N is a Grade 1 Survivor Series ADA compliant passage lever lockset - both simply retract a latch from either side. The E-Plex 5000 can be put into passage as an operating mode, toggled on and off or pre-programmed to relock after 1 to 24 hours, and then returns to PIN access. That is the distinction that matters on a door that has to stand open during business hours and secure itself overnight.
31) Are the Orca OCL series and Stanley QCL cylindrical locksets interchangeable with the E-Plex 5000?
No. The Orca OCL250 is a Grade 2 medium duty entrance cylindrical lockset and the OCL210 is a Grade 2 medium duty passage lockset; the Stanley QCL150 is a Grade 2 entry lever, Sierra bent lever with rose, less cylinder, with a square 2-3/4 inch backset latch and 4-7/8 inch by 1-1/4 inch ASA strike. They share the bored-door prep family, but they are mechanical Grade 2 trim. The E-Plex 5000 is an extra heavy-duty ANSI/BHMA Grade 1 certified lockset with a keypad, a four bolt through-door installation, and a 5 inch minimum recommended stile. Where a spec calls for Grade 1 on the opening, the Grade 2 sets do not meet it.
32) Which of these keypad locks records who opened the door?
The E-Plex 5000 holds the most recent 9,000 lock events in memory, including use of the mechanical key override, with software required to view them. The Alarm Lock T3 DL3075 is a Grade 1 electronic cylindrical lock with audit trail and keypad access. Among the reader-based locks, the Schlage NDEB is a Grade 1 ENGAGE Series cylindrical lock with a Bluetooth Low Energy reader and mobile-enabled multi-function operation. For a facility that needs to answer who entered a stockroom after hours, those are the ones to compare; a mechanical pushbutton like the Lockey 2830 records nothing.
33) What finishes does the E-Plex 5000 keypad lock come in to match my other door hardware?
Five finishes: 626 satin chrome, 625 bright chrome, 605 bright brass, 606 satin brass, and 744 dark bronze with brass accents. Satin chrome 626 is the standard and is what most commercial buildings are already running, so it is the safe match on a building where the mechanical locksets are 626. The lock body is brass or bronze substrate under the finish.
